The Pharmacy Technician apprenticeship is both academic study and implementing skills into your primary role.
Your learning and development is key to us. A Pharmacy Technician Apprentice, you will be based as a paid employee within LCHS in one of departments responsible for Medicine’s Management on standard AFC Terms and conditions. You will develop within this post commencing on B4 until completion of the Apprenticeship.
The academic element of the apprenticeship will be provided by Buttercups, the leading national training provider, over 2 years. It consists of a minimum of one day per week protected apprenticeship study time and the opportunity to put into practice the skills attained.

Typical examples of main apprentice responsibilities are below however, all duties can be accessed via the job specification.
Pharmacy technicians manage the supply of medicines and devices in a pharmacy and assist pharmacists with advisory services. The actual work setting will determine the specific areas of activity that the Pharmacy Technician undertakes, but typically their role will include the following
• providing safe and effective pharmacy services
• supply medicines and devices to patients, whether on prescription or over the counter
• achieving the best outcomes through a patient’s medicines
• assemble medicines for prescriptions
• provide information to patients and other healthcare professionals.
• manage areas of medicines supply such as dispensaries
• supervise other pharmacy staff
• answering customers questions face to face or by phone
• pre-packing, assembling and labelling medicines
• referring problems or queries to the pharmacist
• Community Pharmacy experience gained – working with other pharmacy sectors
A Pharmacy Technician is responsible for carrying out both routine and specialist services, including highly complex activities requiring them to use their professional judgement. They are expected to work both individually and as part of a multi-disciplinary team. They can work with minimum supervision, with a high degree of autonomy, taking responsibility for the quality and accuracy of the work that they have undertaken and that of others.

Specific requirements of apprenticeship
During the initial phase of the apprenticeship, all work activities will be under direct guidance and supervision of a registered Pharmacy Technician or Pharmacist. As the apprenticeship progresses, and following discussion and agreement with supervisors, supervision and guidance will be both direct and indirect.
The apprentice will act in such a way that always safeguards the health and wellbeing of children and vulnerable adults. The apprentice will be familiar with and adhere to LCHS Trust safeguarding policies.

The apprentice will be complete a blended approach to learning. The Formal education will be delivered in partnership with the training provider accredited to provide the apprenticeship degree programme. Ongoing learning and application of skills will take place in the workplace. This will be assessed through ongoing supervision feedback and through annual appraisal.
There will be opportunities to gain insight days with other organisations outside of LCHS that will enable knowledge elements and skills to be practiced arranged by LCHS NHS Trust.
The apprentice must complete and pass all course modules, learning outcomes and medicine management competencies within the contract period as part the apprenticeship agreement.
