Working alongside the Zoo Operations Manager, this position will be essential in ensuring the safe & efficient delivery of the Zoo operation, ensuring the highest standards of animal welfare & husbandry and creating memorable experiences for all our guests!
You will have a particular focus on collection planning, high standards of animal care, and general animal management, including innkeeping enclosures/species and animal acquisitions/dispositions. Acting as chairperson to the CWOAR Zoo Ethics Committee, you will also manage relationships with external stakeholders including Kingston Borough Council, Public Health England, HSE, BIAZA, EAZA, and any similar relevant bodies.
We are looking for someone to lead and develop our zoo keepers team, to ensure we maintain the highest possible standard of Animal Husbandry, Animal Welfare, Conservation, Education, and making sure that our zoo is inspiring to our guests each and every day. Supporting the broader Resort operation in the development of educational and engaging animal encounters.
Qualifications & Experience
1. Experience of managing animal collections including overseeing welfare and veterinary needs in a zoological or related field.
2. Knowledge of best practice husbandry and welfare standards for zoo animals and demonstrable understanding of industry guidance and legislation, and requirements of being a zoo license holder.
3. Understanding of and adherence to relevant Health & Safety procedures and protocols.
4. Previous involvement in leading drills to ensure public safety and animal welfare.
5. ZIMS knowledge and plan to maintain good animal records, ensuring that they are kept up to date.
6. Demonstrable experience of people management, leading and engaging teams.
7. Budget management, including management of capex projects.
8. Confident communicator able to give feedback and work collaboratively.
9. Calm under pressure, with experience of making decisions in dynamically changing situations (for example during incident management).
10. Enthusiastic about conservation and education within animal welfare and husbandry.
11. Actively evolve with change and business requirements and keep up to date within your field.
