Department Overview The Transmission Operational Readiness and Support department provide the acceptance of all transmission projects into the operational side of the business. The department acts as the gatekeepers for the integration of transmission systems and equipment from the design concepts into the live network and ensures strict criteria are adhered to in order to be accepted into one of the world’s largest Emergency Service TETRA network. The department is at the cutting edge of transmission equipment and systems technologies from project concept right through to delivery. This naturally ensures the department are the subject matter experts in each of their respective fields. The department also looks after 3rd line support of all delivered transmission mediums and equipment, and are responsible for managing problematic issues through to resolution following, and supporting, 1st and 2nd line investigation. Support is not limited to 3rd line and also encompasses major incident support. Job Description This role is primarily working out of our Rugby offices during the week, with eventual working from home days, once up to speed in the role. Job Purpose/ Key Responsibilities: Transmission Operational Support Analysts are responsible for ensuring delivery of approved transmission designs into the operational live network. The team will work with the project and design teams to provide an in-depth understanding of the operational requirements, and be the gatekeepers for providing assurance that the project deliverable is in line with the strict contractual requirements and minimising service interruptions. The role is further enhanced by providing specialist support when 1st and 2nd line investigations draw a blank. As specialists in their area, the analyst can provide a more in depth technical report and manage a problematic issue through to a suitable conclusion. This Tier 3 line support role is not limited to this area but is commonly called upon to further complement 1st and 2nd line investigation and is also key in incident management resolutions. To do this they have to employ their specialist knowledge to enable the company to meet its tactical and strategic business objectives. The priority is service first foremost at all times. Decisions the Transmission Operational Support Analyst make in terms of solutions, cost, quality, speed and ease of roll out are an essential enabler for Airwave with its major and minor projects. In order to perform the key tasks required within this role, transmission support analysts must possess highly developed specialist skills and maintain and develop skills to keep up with technology changes. They must also be able to exercise good judgment, make decisions and think in a creative or innovative way to ensure the level of service is maintained to the highest standards. Applying their knowledge and experience proactively to recognise less than optimal performance issues in the existing network, investigate the root cause and create solutions that deliver excellent service, whilst maintaining or reducing Airwave’s costs. This role will require you to join a 1 in 4 on call rota. This role requires security clearance, to be eligible for this you are required to be a resident of the UK for a minimum of 3 years. The purpose of the role is: Be a source of expertise within Airwave for technical and engineering matters relating to our current and future transmission networks. The use of innovative and creative thinking to generate and implement solutions for improving the reliability and resilience of the Airwave transmission network, whilst minimizing or reducing costs. To provide advanced or Tier 3 in depth engineering support to Network Operations, complimenting 1st and 2nd line engineers. To provide expert technical advice and information to Airwave's customers during pre-sales, projects and complex fault investigations when required. Post holder to oversee the Survey, Installation & Commissioning of new transmission equipment into the Airwave Network & manage this process to provide full availability, functionality and service. The post holder ensures appropriate policies are implemented to effectively manage the implementation of the replacement transmission. This includes liaison with the wider business and the Operational Technical team to ensure business continuity & future development. Operational acceptance testing of network solutions to demonstrate that the solution is fit for purpose. In life service definitions and support for Commercial contract teams with supplier negotiations. The ownership and resolution of complex network faults and the provision of solutions to prevent reoccurrence. Provide support to Supplier managers in service review meetings. Provide support to Regional teams to demonstrate network performance. Provide advanced engineering support to assist Network operations staff to resolve complex faults. Provide support to Airwave major project roll outs. Provide the implementation of Airwave self-provide networks, generally using microwave radio and or leased services, from a network management perspective. Develop and implement test strategies for new products and services, following up with a test plan to be used by Airwave staff or third parties when rolling out products and services. Form part of incident support during and outside normal working hours. Be part of an on call remote service team from a Tier 3 line perspective, but in support of 1st and 2nd line. Basic Requirements Degree, HND, HNC or other similar quality formal education in Telecommunications Engineering, 5 years minimum experience within a network problem solving environment or similar. Important areas of working and skills are as follows: Excellent hands on knowledge of remote network management tools, Including but not limited to, iNMS, ProVision, SOX/SOA, CLI interfaces etc. Ethernet and Layer 1 and 2 interfaces and protocols. Internet Protocol and Layer 3 interfaces and protocols. IP-MPLS and MPLS-TP, differences and where the two are typically used. Networking in general, including Cisco/Juniper and other well-known vendors Packet network components and devices. Microwave radio systems, including Hybrid TDM-Ethernet types. Microwave band selection, technical and authority requirements vs operational and budget requirements. SDH and PDH Multiplexing (a dying art but we and our supplier’s still use multiplexers). SDN and SON networks. Optical systems and devices. Optical networks, optical vs electrical multiplexing techniques how they differ and when are they used (I.e. Add-Drop and payload manipulation between routes or capacity multiplication). Strong understanding of cellular networks. Strong understanding of transmission networks (microwave) Good understanding of TETRA mobile communications technology. Basic project management skills. Strong attention to detail Strong analytical skills Ability to learn and adapt to new skills and products. Experienced in a transmission related telecommunications field, that includes both operations and engineering responsibilities. Knowledge of packet based transmission networks. In depth knowledge and experience of fault investigation and rectification gained in an operational environment. Roll out of major transmission projects. Experience in the installation and commissioning of Telecoms related equipment’s and infrastructure. Experience in the maintenance of Telecoms related equipment’s and infrastructure.
