BBC Studios Kids and Family animation slate covers preschool to family programming and appeals to domestic and international buyers. A key focus of the slate is building properties to become strong brands and activate the expertise of each division to create successful franchise.
THE ROLE
Do you have a proven track record for developing and securing animation commissions?
Are you an experienced Animation Development Executive with the commercial insight and industry networks to win business and drive growth across our Animation slate?
The Development Executive for Animation is responsible for overseeing the Kids & Family slate of original IP and existing shows in development. You will have a proven track record for developing global and commercial IP, and rely on your knowledge of emerging talent and the domestic and global markets to identify new material and IP.
With a strong existing network of contacts across the television industry, you will build and nurture relationships with current and potential clients around the world. Your market expertise will ensure our development slate and productions remain innovative, current and commercial.
You will have a strong track record of developing shows from early concept through to greenlight, ideally with knowledge of financing structures. You will have a good understanding of production – ideally having worked in production as well as development -and experience of coordinating with production team on budgets and schedules.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Work with the VP of Development Animation and Live-Action and team to build a creative and diverse slate across multiple genres and demographics.
2. Ensure the animation development slate hits short and long term goals, and clear priorities are set for the team to achieve.
3. Strategise what the slate is missing, where the market is going and ensure team is aware of the creative goals we need to find/create.
4. Expand the overall slate through traditional and non-traditional sources.
5. Lead development projects to ensure smooth and positive process for all involved.
6. Liaise with partners, Producers / Executive Producers, Network Executives and Creators/Showrunners on each project.
7. Maintain and develop global partnerships, seeking co-development and co-production opportunities.
8. Communicate with domestic and international broadcasters regularly, alongside the distribution team.
9. Pitch the slate internally and externally.
10. Lead and provide creative feedback on key stages throughout the development process and attend all major partnership meetings.
11. Monitor and remain current with the trends in programming, production and retail.
12. Oversee projects with VP development and VP Production as they move into production to ensure a smooth hand off to the production team and creative leads.
13. Work closely with the VP development to strategise upcoming annual slate needs.
14. Provide editorial, creative and commercial input to the team including responding to the submission of story ideas, scripts and books.
15. Seek out new and diverse voices and creatives.
16. Demonstrate sound editorial judgement about ideas based on an understanding of target audience, genre objectives, broadcaster/platform need.
17. Manage ideas and submissions from our indie partners (indie slate).
WHAT DOES IT TAKE?
ESSENTIAL
• Animation Development Executive experience, including experience of working in a leadership position where you have been responsible for setting and leading strategy, managing a team and winning business.
• Experience of developing 0 to 12’s animation.
• Experience and evidence of successfully developing global and commercial IP.
• Experience and evidence of winning animation commissions.
• Experience and evidence of successfully developing shows from early concept through to green light.
• Expert commercial and market knowledge of the television landscape, with specific focus on animation.
• Extensive network of industry contacts including commissioners, broadcasters and other potential clients.
• Experience and evidence of managing, developing and introducing stakeholder relationships at all levels.
• Experience and evidence of confidently pitching and selling ideas.
• Expert knowledge of the animation production process.
DESIRABLE
• Co-production experience including knowledge of experience of working with financing structures.
• Experience and knowledge of working with Kids & Family.
• Experience of working in animation production.
