Job Purpose
To support operational and teaching activities across the MVLS Education Hub, within Life Sciences teaching laboratory facilities (position based in the Biochemistry Teaching Laboratories).
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. Basic upkeep of the Biochemistry teaching laboratories to the required high standards, eg cleaning benches, equipment and glassware, sterilising glass and plasticware, disposal of waste material in accordance with standard operating procedures (SOPs).
2. Assist with routine preparation for practical classes, eg labelling containers, aliquoting reagents using a range of measuring equipment following established methods and SOPs, setting out class materials.
3. Set-up and take-down of displays and posters for recruitment events, classes and examinations.
4. Assist with the set-up of seminar rooms and laboratories for practical classes and lectures as required.
5. Transport equipment, consumables and personnel between laboratories and other venues within MVLS Education Hub, managed by the Life Sciences Support Team.
6. Transport chemicals and other materials between laboratories, including hazardous materials (eg sharps, solvents, carcinogenic substances, corrosive substances) and assist with the transportation of liquid nitrogen in accordance with Health and Safety regulations.
7. Drive staff, students, and equipment in minibuses and vans to various locations within the UK, ensuring loads are secure and comply with current legislation, route planning/preparation, looking after the health and safety of passengers.
8. Other duties as required by Line Manager/Chief Technician. Training will be provided where necessary.
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential
1. Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar role, or Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 4 in English and Mathematics (National 4) or equivalent, and some experience of working in a similar role.
2. Knowledge and understanding of cross contamination issues.
3. Clean UK driving licence (categories B and D1), held for a minimum of 2 years.
Desirable
1. ADR licence as required by drivers of vehicles carrying dangerous goods on the public highway – full training will be provided if required.
2. First Aid Certificate – full training will be provided if required.

Experience

1. Demonstrable relevant work experience in a similar role.
2. Manual handling experience.

1. Previous experience of working in a hospital/university environment.
Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 3, £23,028 - £23,881 per annum.
This post is full time and open ended.
