Job overview
We are seeking a motivated and skilled Assistant Psychologist to become an integral part of our friendly and expanding team within the Psychological Services department at Hull University Teaching Hospitals. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to our neurorehabilitation and neuro-oncology services, delivering high-quality, evidence-based psychological support to individuals coping with brain injuries and brain tumours.
The post will be managed within the wider Department of Psychological Services, which is a rapidly expanding and forward-thinking team of psychologists and psychological therapists. The post will be supported with regular supervision from experienced qualified clinicians, access to peer support and professional development opportunities, and engagement with our medical teams, renowned for their dedication and innovative approaches to patient care.
Main duties of the job
The Assistant Psychologist will contribute to high-quality patient care within the neurorehabilitation and neuro-oncology services, administering cognitive tests and offering psychological support under the supervision of a clinical neuropsychologist. The post holder will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, participate in research and audit activities, and adhere to Trust and departmental policies while staying updated on service and professional standards.
There will be opportunities for delivering training to other staff as guided by their supervisor, ensuring compliance with record-keeping guidelines, and engaging in service-related research under supervision. Additionally, they will work within the code of ethics and professional practice guidelines, keeping abreast of developments in clinical psychology.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The post holder will actively contribute to high-quality patient care within both the neurorehabilitation and neuro-oncology services. This will include direct contact with patients and family/carers to carry out cognitive assessments, deliver psychological information and low-level interventions on a one-to-one basis, under the supervision of a clinical neuropsychologist. The post holder will also contribute to effective multidisciplinary care within the wider teams through team working, attendance at meetings and involvement in research and audit activities.
The post holder may give specialist advice, and provide training and teaching for different audiences, under the direction of a clinical psychologist and will be responsible for maintaining agreed standards, including record keeping.
The post holder will follow Trust and departmental policies, and comment on proposals when required. They will keep up to date with service and professional policies, procedures and standards.
The post holder will be responsible for delivering training to other staff under the guidance of their supervisor. They will explain and demonstrate a range of learnt procedures to other team members in order to assist them to develop skills. For example, providing training on psychological concepts to other professionals and participating in the departmental professional development schedule.
The post holder will participate in service-related research as guided by their supervisor. Under the guidance of a clinical psychologist, they will prepare, carry out and write up relevant research or audit projects, independently or jointly with other professionals.
The post holder will maintain and store all patient records according to Trust and professional guidelines. They will securely process and store private and sensitive information, write clear and concise clinical notes, and contribute to reports when required for different audiences (e.g. patients, carers, staff, professionals).
The post holder will be responsible for the maintenance and care of the resources within their clinical services.
The post holder will work within the code of ethics and the relevant professional practice guidelines of the British Psychological Society, as well as the policies, professional framework and standard operating procedures (SOPs) of the Trust, under the guidance of weekly clinical supervision. The post holder will also keep up to date with developments in clinical psychology.
Person specification
Education/Qualifications
* BSc (Hons) 2:1 or above in Psychology
* Graduate membership of the BPS
Knowledge, Training & Experience
* Experience of working within a clinical setting alongside psychological therapists or other mental health professionals
* Experience of carrying out psychometric testing under supervision
* Experience of working with patients with long-term health conditions
* Experience of working with behaviours that can present challenges to services
* Experience of using CBT informed ideas for individual-based therapy
* Knowledge of risk assessment processes
Communication and Interpersonal Skills
* Skills in communication, teaching/presenting, managing challenging behaviour and clinical assessment
* Experience of working within team environments
* Specialised training / knowledge in management of challenging behavior.
* Experience of planning and co-facilitating therapeutic groups.
* Research experience
* Knowledge of relevant legislation and implications for clinical practice.
