Sandwell & West Birmingham NHS Trust is a friendly, integrated healthcare provider focused on improving the life chances and health outcomes of our diverse population.
We have three strategic objectives:
1. People: To cultivate and sustain happy, productive and engaged staff.
2. Patients: To be good or outstanding at everything we do.
3. Population: To work seamlessly with partners to improve lives.
We run services from Midland Metropolitan University Hospital, Sandwell Health Campus, City Health Campus, Rowley Regis Community Hospital, Birmingham & Midland Eye Centre, The Lyng and Leasowes Intermediate Care Centre. Our GP practices and community teams provide care in schools, healthcare centres and at home.
Developing and caring for our People is fundamental. We were one of the first Trusts to provide the Real Living Wage, as well as a Live and Work scheme to support people at risk of homelessness into paid work and training. We offer a range of staff benefits, health & wellbeing support and will help you to bring your ambition to life through our bespoke training and development programmes. As “People” is one of our three strategic objectives, we make a continued commitment to prioritise support for all our colleagues.
Healthcare services have a significant impact on the environment. We are committed to embedding sustainable practices. We expect all colleagues to support the delivery of our Green Strategic Plan and to drive positive changes in their department.
Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated Therapy Assistant Practitioner to join the in-patient therapy team at Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust. This post provides the opportunity to work in the integrated Medicine therapy team, which currently provides therapy services to a wide range of patients including frail elderly population, cardiology, gastroenterology and general medical patients across both the Sandwell and City Hospital sites.
In this role you would be required to work as part of a multidisciplinary team on the Medical wards, triaging new admissions to the ward to determine if therapy assessment is required, attending the daily MDT board rounds, and completing comprehensive assessments of patients and creating individual treatment plans to improve patients mobility, increase their function and promote their independence.
You will work closely with both occupational therapists and physiotherapists to deliver evidence based patient care, which will be supported by our strong commitment to staff support, clinical supervision and teamwork. The environment is fast paced and therefore requires someone who thrives under this type of pressure and who is flexible and adaptable. You will part of the 7 day working rota covering the hours of 8am to 8pm.
We would welcome applications from experienced band 3/equivalent physio assistants who are or would be willing to work towards the foundation degree.
Main duties of the job
1. Assist in the day to day delivery and organisation of the Service through direct and non-direct patient duties to ensure that priorities are met. This involves the efficient and effective control of own caseload.
2. To complete comprehensive social history, initial assessment and formulising treatment plans with liaising with the qualified staff members.
3. To be able to complete community referrals for patients as part of their safe discharge.
4. To have a good understanding of all the discharge pathways for patients from various boroughs in and around Sandwell.
5. To assess, prescribe and issue therapeutic equipment for patients which are essential for their safe discharge from hospital.
6. To be part of 7 day working rota, in-service training and Quality Improvement half days.
Working for our organisation
Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust (SWBT) is an integrated care organisation with a budget of approximately £600 million and over 7,000 staff. Diversity and social care is at the core of what we do as the Trust provides Community and Acute Services to over half a million people in an urban centre that demands massive regeneration and has substantial premature mortality.
Our new acute hospital, the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH), opens in 2024 and will provide care to our local population from first class, purpose-built premises. As a result, the base of this role may change to MMUH from 2024 (or beyond). If this is applicable to your role, you will be informed during the recruitment process and continuing your application with this understanding. The development of the new hospital will play an important role in the regeneration of the wider area and in improving the lives of local people and reducing health inequalities.
We have three newly emerging strategic objectives:
1. Our People – to cultivate and sustain happy, productive and engaged staff.
2. Our Patients – to be good or outstanding in everything we do.
3. Our Population – to work seamlessly with our partners to improve lives.
