Key Responsibilities:
1. Ensure safe quality care is provided for patients within the Unit as per Trust and Unit policy.
2. Manage the team as a team leader, actively participating in the scrub and circulating team in a designated highly specialist area without supervision.
3. Demonstrate a high level of communication and relationship skills, promoting effective liaison throughout the Unit team and with the wider multidisciplinary team.
4. Support the Co-ordinator in the effective management of the unit, including liaising with Recovery about amendments or changes to the list.
5. Organise the multidisciplinary staff allocated to your control on a daily basis.
6. Ensure the Theatre list runs smoothly and safely, involving extensive cooperation and communication with the multidisciplinary team.
7. Ensure the Health and Safety of all staff, patients, and visitors, reporting all incidents/accidents/near misses to the Co-ordinator.
8. Document and monitor the safe use of all equipment and the economic use of supplies.
9. Maintain an understanding of and adhere to all Trust and Unit policies and procedures, ensuring attendance of mandatory annual training (e.g., Fire, Manual Handling, CPR).
10. Enhance patient care by ensuring effective assessment of patient needs, making complex decisions on surgical emergencies, and coordinating specialist surgery requirements out of hours.
11. Deliver personal patient programmes of care and continually assess, evaluate, and update them.
12. Communicate sensitively with patients and relatives who may be distressed or anxious.
13. Be responsible for the repair, maintenance, and safe use of equipment, ensuring competent knowledge and fault-finding skills.
14. Ensure correct provision of all cumulative parts of prosthesis implantation, involving auditing and adherence to protocol.
15. Liaise with and assist appropriate clinical specialists regarding individual patient care.
16. Meet Nursing & Midwifery Council, Healthcare Professions Council, and Continuing Professional Development requirements.
17. Develop the clinical skills of new and newly qualified staff within your area, acting as their mentor/preceptor.
18. Ensure Trust policies and procedures are met regarding personal professional responsibilities.
19. Act as a role model and resource for junior members of staff.
20. Order, store, dispense, and record drugs in accordance with Trust policy.
21. Input and retrieve patient information from Trust information technology systems.
22. Participate in auditing and implementing necessary changes and service improvements in the Unit.
23. Manage resources appropriately and act as a link nurse, maintaining a learning environment for colleagues.
24. Communicate efficiently with the multidisciplinary team and keep your Line Manager informed of changes affecting patient care delivery.
25. Be responsible for the Department in the absence of your Line Manager.
26. Keep abreast of current and future nursing and peri-operative trends.
27. Promote an environment of openness and support for all staff, patients, and visitors.
28. Perform any job-related duties assigned by your Line Manager within accepted levels of accountability.
