The vacancy has arisen for one Clinical Fellow (ST3+) in Respiratory Medicine, based within the Cardiothoracic Department, at the Freeman Hospital.
The post is to commence from 6 August 2025 until 4 August 2026.

Main duties of the job
This post is an exciting opportunity to gain experience in Respiratory Medicine, encompassing management of common and advanced respiratory diseases but also aspects of the specialty not readily available elsewhere. In particular, the Freeman Hospital is one of the UK's leading highly specialised centres for advanced lung disease, pulmonary hypertension, bronchiectasis and sleep medicine services, with an internationally renowned centre for Lung Transplantation. The successful applicant will have a unique opportunity to gain some clinical experience in these respiratory sub-specialties. This post may be suitable for those considering a career in respiratory medicine who want more experience before applying for a Specialist Training post or for those who have completed Specialist Training but want more experience prior to becoming a consultant.
Job responsibilities
The post will be supervised and therefore suitable for any trainee who has acquired MRCP (UK) or equivalent (or is near to acquiring this), up to and including candidates post-CCT in Respiratory Medicine who wish to take advantage of the additional experience available at the Freeman Hospital.
There will be opportunities for the appointee to gain practical knowledge of the clinical management of all forms of advanced lung disease including the assessment and management of patients both pre and post lung transplant, pulmonary arterial hypertension, lung cancer, pleural disease, airways disease, respiratory failure, bronchiectasis and sleep medicine. Depending on the candidates prior experience and interests, there is opportunity to gain further experience in other areas of respiratory medicine including, but not confined to, those listed below:
1. Management of patients with various forms of lung malignancy, pleural disease, airways disease and respiratory failure.
2. Gain experience in the management of pulmonary vasculitis.
3. Manage patients with bronchiectasis including understanding of the role of a specialist service.
4. Manage patients referred to the Difficult Asthma Service.
5. Gain further experience in Sleep Medicine as part of the Regional Sleep service.
6. Deepen understanding of the interpretation and value of pulmonary function testing.
7. Learn and manage the predictors for successful lung transplantation and appropriate risk assessment.
8. Assess and manage referrals for a Respiratory specialist opinion from other specialist departments within the Freeman Hospital.
9. Complete quality improvement project.
Person Specification
Education and Qualifications
* Essential Primary Medical Qualification
* Full GMC registration or eligibility to obtain this within 3 months
* Full MRCP(UK) or equivalent
Clinical Skills and Knowledge
* Good history & examination skills
* Able to formulate a working diagnosis
* Able to order appropriate investigations
* Image interpretation relevant to practice
* Knows when to appropriately seek assistance from a senior colleague
* Evidence of competence in care of Respiratory patients at CMT 2/ST level or equivalent
* Emergency level thoracic ultrasound capability (BTS training standard)
* Capability in undertaking pleural aspiration and chest drain insertion with indirect supervision
* Evidence of seeing patients with respiratory disease independently in outpatient clinics
Maintaining Clinical Competence
* Written evidence of satisfactory training to date e.g. procedural / clinic logs.
Teaching
* Experience of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
* Experience of participation in formal undergraduate and postgraduate educational activities
* Evidence of formal teaching training
* Formal teaching qualification
Clinical Governance, Audit and Research
