We are currently looking for a suitably qualified and experienced Foreperson – Road Planing to join our fantastic team here at National Road Planing based in Thatcham, close to Reading in Berkshire. This role is easily commutable from the towns/cities such as Reading, Basingstoke, Newbury, Slough, Burghfield, Maidenhead, Cholsey, Fleet, Tadley, Theale, Wantage, Abingdon, Didcot, Wallingford, Benson and the surrounding areas.

Main Responsibilities
As the Foreperson – Road Planing you will report directly to the Supervisor – Road Planing. You will have worked in the Planing industry with essential experience of working on Highways Planing projects. Other responsibilities for this role will include:
You as the Foreperson – Road Planing will be responsible for:
1. Manage machine, vehicle and colleagues, ensuring you and they are properly informed and equipped to carry out tasks, recording any defects on the daily plant defect sheet and reporting them straight away.
2. Operation of a Caterpillar 2 mtr planer or be willing to train on conversion to this planer – previous experience of operating a road planer is essential in this role.
3. Employees have relevant proof of identification and competency, ensuring all operatives and sub-contractors are trained and authorised to undertake their duties and are all wearing the required PPE, including approved communication headsets.
4. Manage and comply with all safety requirements, compliance with company standards and procedures for employees and sub-contractors using the daily briefing process and Tool Box Talks.
5. Complete site-specific documentation (i.e. Site Record Sheet and Environmental Assessment).
6. Attend site specific induction/briefing prior to starting work.
7. Encourage challenges of safety issues, report these challenges using the Safety Observation, Near Hit/Miss process.
8. Ensure environmental processes and best practice across the contract.
The Ideal Candidate
As our ideal Foreperson – Road Planing, you will have (not exhaustive):
1. Essential - You will be experienced using a road planer – ideally this will be a Caterpillar 2mtr.
2. Essential - CSCS Qualification.
3. NVQ level 2 in a role related discipline.
4. MPQC/EPIC Competency Card.
5. Understanding of surfacing methods to determine the correct approach to the planing task.
6. Knowledge of planing machine capabilities and the ability to contribute to the operation.
7. Developing People – help develop operatives to become multi-skilled with the ability and confidence to step into different roles.
8. Flexibility - Change own approach in line with new priorities; reflect on situations and learn from experience; be open to feedback from others, taking time to listen; keep up-to-date with specific technical and functional skills.
9. Thinking Skills - Consider all potential causes and underlying causes of a problem; quickly identify the cause of a problem; take full ownership for resolving problems and implementing actions.
It is essential due to the role that the successful candidate for the position of Foreperson – Road Planing has previous working experience in this sector.
You must hold a Full UK manual car driving licence with no more than 6 penalty points.
