Locations: Flexibility over agreeing which one of our Council Offices locations the role is based from, with hybrid working opportunities and a requirement to cover the North Yorkshire area for hearings and meetings.

About the team
The Legal Service is part of Legal and Democratic Services within the Chief Executive’s Group. North Yorkshire Council provides a range of services to North Yorkshire, and the role of the Legal Service is to support that provision by providing a comprehensive and efficient legal service to the Directorates, the Council’s Executive, full Council, Committees and Members, and external clients.
The nature of the work requires a flexible and versatile approach as it will change from time to time in response to the changing needs of the Council and its developing initiatives. The postholder is required to work with colleagues and Members at every level within the organisation and with external clients and partners.
The role…
The main focus of the role is planning, and you will advise Officers and Councillors on a wide range of development control, planning policy and enforcement issues, S106 work and will attend at Council Committees. You may also need to undertake work relating to highways, public rights of way and common land and village greens as well as attending at Court and Inquiries as part of your role. Support will be provided in any areas of the law where the candidate has not had the relevant experience.
You will be part of a supportive team of professionals with variable workloads, having the opportunity to learn and develop in other disciplines within our service.
You will have a fine eye for detail and thrive in a fast-paced environment with a dynamic and varied workload.
About you and what you will bring
1. Hold a qualification as a Solicitor, Barrister or FILEX.
2. Be aware of the political structure and functions of the Council.
3. Have an ability to interact positively with colleagues, clients and elected Members.
4. Knowledge or experience of working in Local Authority is advantageous but not essential; we would welcome applications from the private sector.
5. You must have a practising certificate and be able to evidence this.
6. We are looking for forward-thinking individuals that can demonstrate resilience and can produce timely solutions for a range of problems.
Key attributes:
1. Demonstrable knowledge of law in one of the areas within the portfolios.
2. A working knowledge of Court procedures and of attending Court if relevant to the portfolio assigned.
3. Demonstrable experience of legal work in one of the areas within the portfolios.
4. Ability to communicate effectively in writing to produce documents in a range of formats and styles to suit a range of audiences and produce a representative record of meeting discussions and actions.
