Job overview
Applications are invited from enthusiastic and motivated HCPC-Registered Biomedical Scientists to join our friendly team in Clinical Biochemistry as part of the Blood Sciences Department. Previous laboratory experience and basic IT skills would be an advantage for the position; however, full training will be provided. This is a developmental post; you will be working towards the IBMS Specialist postgraduate portfolio in Clinical Biochemistry.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will be expected to deliver what is required to achieve a safe, high-quality, and effective service while continuously striving for improvement.
The Trust serves a population of over 400,000 and is based in laboratories at Calderdale Royal Hospital (CRH) and Huddersfield Royal Infirmary (HRI). The department has full UKAS ISO15189:2022 accreditation and has IBMS approval for training. The department offers training and development opportunities for the right candidate to further develop their skills and ambitions.
The Biochemistry section is well equipped with Siemens Atellica SCI systems, Versacell X3, Advia chemistry 1800, and Centaur XPT analysers interfaced to the Atellica Data Management system, alongside other semi-automated platforms.

Following a period of training and competency assessments, the successful candidate will be expected to participate in round-the-clock working patterns, which include earlies, days, lates, nights, bank holidays, and weekend working primarily at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary, with a requirement to work on a rotational basis at Calderdale Royal Hospital.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
1. Provide confidential, specialised, and sensitive diagnostic test results over the telephone to users of the service, providing explanations of results where necessary.
2. Act as the primary point of contact for the laboratory when working alone outside normal working hours.
3. Liaise with other members of staff within the department on a routine basis to ensure safe and efficient daily operation.
4. Plan your own work and that of the department and prioritise urgent samples.
5. Co-ordinate the work within a section in conjunction with other biomedical scientists.
6. Maintain good hand-eye coordination when handling potentially infectious material and using laboratory equipment.
7. Prepare specimens from patients for routine diagnostic testing.
8. Carry out and analyse the results of a wide range of complex diagnostic tests.
9. Perform maintenance and basic repairs of the automated analysers.
10. Help formulate SOPs with the Senior BMS in the section.
11. Maintain adequate levels of laboratory kits and reagents in the department.
12. Assist with the training of new Biomedical Support Workers, APs, newly qualified Biomedical Scientists, and Biomedical Science students.

QUALIFICATIONS / TRAINING
* Accredited Degree in Biomedical Science and a completed registration portfolio
* State registration with the HCPC
* Postgraduate qualifications related to Clinical Biochemistry
KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE & EXPERTISE
* Significant recent post-registration experience within a Biochemistry department
* Supervision and training of biomedical support workers, associate practitioners, trainee BMS, and BMS staff
* Experience of UKAS accreditation
* Knowledge of all areas of the Biochemistry department
* Demonstrate commitment to and participation in continued professional development
* Knowledge and understanding of laboratory accreditation and other quality standards associated with Clinical Biochemistry laboratories
* Ability to deal with sensitive data in accordance with departmental and Trust guidelines
* Demonstrate a sound knowledge base in laboratory practice in Clinical Biochemistry
* Ability to run, maintain, and fault-find on laboratory equipment
* Good IT Skills
* Experience of laboratory and clinical audit
* Experience of stock control systems
* Experience in Blood transfusion Blood Tracking System
* Active participation in Service Development
* Ability to give presentations on results of trials or audits to interested parties in the Trust
