Job overview
Be an integral part of the Pharmacy Team developing Aseptic Services for the patients and staff of this Trust and other local healthcare providers.
Participate in the provision of aseptically prepared intravenous medicines using technical skills, including final check and release of aseptically prepared products.
Ensure the efficient management and maintenance of inventory within the aseptic services unit of the pharmacy.
Main duties of the job
1. Assist in the provision of aseptically prepared pharmaceuticals (batches and patient specific).
2. Lead on inventory maintenance.
3. Lead on stock co-ordination within aseptic service.
4. Perform other tasks necessary to ensure that ASU operates in an appropriate and efficient manner.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Assist in the provision of aseptically prepared pharmaceuticals (batches and patient specific). This will include the following tasks, all performed accurately and following SOPs:
1. Co-ordinate the day to day workload, ensuring items are manufactured in a timely manner and colleagues are supported.
2. Follow good manufacturing practice (GMP) at all times.
3. Generate worksheets and labels, ensuring medicines are charged correctly using the pharmacy computer system.
4. In-process check worksheets and labels, ensuring medicines are charged correctly.
5. Assemble drugs, diluents and consumables prior to aseptic dispensing.
6. Participate in ‘in-process’ checks of drugs, diluents and consumables prior to aseptic dispensing.
7. Assist with decontamination of products from the support room & cleanroom prior to preparation (spraying and wiping).
8. Check /prepare the isolators are ready for use before each session.
9. Aseptically dispense injections and infusions within the appropriate work zone.
10. In-process volume check injections and infusions.
11. Final pack and label prepared items and pass them to the final checking stage.
12. Dispense batched products, including product selection, labelling and packaging, including parental nutrition.
13. Order and dispense outsourced patient specific items, including parental nutrition.
14. Be registered as a named person on the Intrathecal Chemotherapy register, in order to complete the above tasks for Intrathecal drugs.
15. Final check and release dispensed patient specific aseptic items.
16. Final check dispensed parental nutrition or other aseptic items manufactured by external suppliers.
17. Final check batched aseptic items & take these to QA for release.
18. Only complete the above tasks if validations and competencies have been completed and authorised, and to keep all validations and competencies for the above tasks in date.
19. Seek advice from senior colleagues where needed.
Lead on inventory maintenance. This will include the following tasks:
1. Monitor and maintain stock reorder levels to ensure adequate supply of pharmaceutical products.
2. Segregate, organize and maintain stock locations to comply with storage requirements and regulations.
3. Monitor and coordinate the usage or resale of stock close to expiration dates to minimize waste.
Lead on stock co-ordination within aseptic services. This will include the following tasks:
1. Monitor and communicate to ASU management and team potential supply issues so that contingencies can be considered.
2. Liaising with stores/QA on the resolution of supply issues to help ensure continued supply of products for treatment to patients.
3. Assist in coordinating product brand switches to ensure smooth transitions.
4. Work closely with the sustainability technician in ASU to reduce wastage.
5. Ensure stock levels are appropriate for production of batches.
Perform other tasks necessary to ensure that ASU operates in an appropriate and efficient manner. This will include the following tasks:
1. Upload documents to the electronic quality management system (EQMS).
2. Assist in ensuring agreed environmental monitoring (including ensuring end of session broths are available) and cleaning procedures are carried out and relevant records kept.
3. Ensure adequate stock of outsourced and/or in-house dose-banded items.
4. Assist with reducing wastage by processing returns and re-using products where possible.
5. Assist with data collection and audits, when required.
6. Deliver exposed settle plates to microbiology at the end of each day.
7. Ensure delivery and collection of cleanroom clothing.
8. Assist in ensuring maintenance of adequate & accurate stock levels and proper storage of medicinal products and consumables used by ASU.
9. Assist in the training of pharmacy and other staff, when required.
10. Answer the telephone and liaise with pharmacy staff and ASU customers regarding patients treatment.
11. Attend ASU and other pharmacy meetings when required.
12. Attend study days and training programs as requested by your manager to ensure continuing personal development.
13. Highlight potential corrective and preventable actions (CAPA) and service improvements to enable colleagues to learn from errors or quality issues.
14. Undertake any other related duties as may be deemed necessary.
15. Represent the ASU department at pharmacy meetings.
16. Assist in updating procedures and writing new procedures.
17. If required, to deputise for the Advanced Pharmacy Technician.

Key Competencies/Personal Qualities and Attributes
* Able to undertake aseptic manipulations in isolators
* Accurate

Education, Training and Qualifications
* Qualified Pharmacy Technician; NVQ Level 3 in Pharmacy Services, or equivalent qualification as a Pharmacy Technician OR Qualified Science Manufacturing Technician; Full Science Manufacturing Technician Level 3 Standard OR Bachelors degree in pharmacy, pharmaceutical science or related science subject.
* Professional registration with GPhC, Science Council or Royal Pharmaceutical Society
* Aseptic Preparation and Dispensing of Medicines
Skills
* Use of Microsoft office applications, e.g. excel, word
Knowledge and Experience
* In depth understanding of GMP.
* Knowledge of practice in hospital Aseptic Services
* Experience of final checking
* Experience of GCP / setting up clinical trials within an aseptic unit
* Experience of creating debtor forms, dealing with invoice queries.
* Experience of conducting risk assessments and COSHH assessments
* Experience of implementing CAPA
