Senior Nurse Specialist - Eating Disorders

An opportunity has arisen for a Band 7 Senior Nurse Specialist within the Community Team at Vincent Square Eating Disorders Service. This is a friendly, ever-growing team consisting of clinical nurse specialists, occupational therapists, nursing associates, MEED Practitioner, family therapist, and a consultant psychiatrist. The team is responsible for many exciting pathways including FREED (Early Intervention) and Intensive Community Treatment.
You will provide senior nurse leadership within the Community Team. As post holder and in conjunction with the multidisciplinary team, you will take a senior role in the processing of all new referrals to the service. You will assess, plan and provide supportive clinical management, using evidence-based models of care, to a caseload of patients suffering from severe eating disorders and having complex needs. You will liaise with GPs and other professionals involved in their care to coordinate care and to manage risks.
You will also liaise with referrers and offer training and advice to primary and secondary services and other external agencies as required. You will share the supervision responsibilities of the Community Team with peers and contribute to the wider clinical initiatives within the Eating Disorders service.
Main duties of the job
You will carry a caseload of patients from all EDS borough areas. You will provide specialist assessment to those referred to the service, and provide guidance to referrers and external agencies on the management of patients suffering with an eating disorder. You will facilitate with nursing colleagues, risk management clinics including physical health checks and mental health reviews. You will provide senior nursing support and supervision to the liaison team in collaboration with the manager and peers. You will also contribute to the wider nursing initiative of the service.
Job responsibilities
* To contribute to the processing of all new referrals including triaging for the designated boroughs and highlight any referrals needing further discussion with the Clinical Nurse Manager and or Outpatient Consultant Psychiatrist and the relevant meetings.
* To provide assessment of complex referrals and advice to referring agents on how to access services.
* To work with families as appropriate.
* To provide consultation and advice to referrers; children & young people and their families.
* To provide effective nurse leadership, expertise, advice, and support to the team and ensure the provision of high-quality care to patients with eating disorders.
* To act as a role model and highly competent practitioner.
* To provide supervision shared with band 7 peers to the Community Team clinicians.
* To participate in the recruitment of staff to the Community Team, and assist with interview panels in the wider service as required.
* To take part in the induction of new staff to the Community Team.
* To contribute to the continued development of the treatment pathway from the point of referral through to discharge.
* To promote an innovative and progressive attitude to the continual improvement of patient care through research and evidence-based practice.
Person Specification
Education & Qualifications
* Registered Mental Nurse [NMC Registered]
* Relevant Degree or Diploma
* Degree/Masters
* Therapy Skills training/qualification to practitioner level.
Previous Experience
* Extensive post-registration experience (substantial experience at Band 6 or above) and experience in a community setting in mental health.
* Experience of working with patients suffering from a range of eating disorders.
* Experience of supervising or managing other staff.
* Wide-ranging experience of the care of patients with a range of mental health problems.
* Experience of working within an MDT.
* Experience of undertaking assessments and formulation of patients with a range of Eating Disorders.
* Working within a health care management role.
* Working within a CAMHS setting.
Skills and Knowledge
* To demonstrate an ability to formulate a safe and adequate risk management plan, which considers all relevant medical and psychiatric risks.
* Able to build constructive relationships with all stakeholders including service users, carers, commissioners, GPs, and other teams by demonstrating warmth, respect, empathy, and dignity using good communication skills.
* To demonstrate an understanding of treatments for patients suffering from an eating disorder and/or medical/psychiatric co-morbidities.
