The Position We are seeking a highly motivated UAS Engineer to design, develop, and test novel unmanned aerial systems (UAS) for various applications aligned with MARSS business sectors (Safety, Security, Defence). Main Responsibilities The role involves developing and integrating innovative hardware and software, ensuring seamless system operation, and enhancing autonomous capabilities. System Design & Development – Design and develop UAV platforms, including airframes, propulsion systems, avionics, and power management. Cross-functional Collaboration – Work with mechanical, electrical, and software engineers to develop robust UAS solutions in support of MARSS Mission. Autonomy & AI Integration – Work with AI/ML specialists to implement autonomous navigation, image processing, sensor fusion, and real-time decision-making capabilities. Hardware & Software Integration – Integrate and optimise: autopilot systems; communications (e.g. Doodlelabs); sensors (GNSS, Visible/IR Cameras, radar, LiDAR etc); propulsion and power train etc. Rapid Prototyping & Iteration – Work in an agile start-up type environment, developing and testing new UAV technologies at pace. Drive development to get product to market rapidly with a ‘fly, fail, learn’ mindset. Flight Testing & Validation – Plan and conduct UAV flight trials, gathering and analysing performance data to refine system capabilities. Regulatory Compliance: Work collaboratively to ensure UAV systems achieve aviation and safety standards (SORA as applied to CAA/MAA, EASA regulatory bodies). Requirements Degree (BEng, MEng, MSc, or PhD) in Aerospace Engineering, Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related STEM subject. 4 years experience in the field of UAS development. Strong understanding of flight control systems, aerodynamics, propulsion, power train and autonomy.
