Applications are invited to apply for a Medical Retina, Vitreoretinal and General Ophthalmology Consultant at Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
The successful candidate will become part of a team of 6 other Consultant Ophthalmologists, 5 middle grade/training doctors and an exceptional team of allied health professionals. The applicant will be required to be experienced in the management of Medical Retinal, Vitreoretinal, Macular, general and acute ophthalmic conditions. He/she will be expected to actively participate in audit projects and contribute to the Medical Retina Service including the development of nursing and allied health professionals in extended roles. The successful candidate will be key in helping restructure the Retina pathways, in partnership with Mr Julian Robins, Retina Service lead, in meeting demand for an expanding population.
The eye department serves Milton Keynes and the immediate surrounding areas consisting of a modern outpatient and day case surgery unit. This happy and self-contained unit is situated within the hospital campus with easy access, onsite parking and nearby railway links.
The out-patient eye department is in a self-contained spacious unit with 7 Consulting rooms beside 4 orthoptic and 3 optometry rooms. The department also benefits from a dedicated Intravitreal injection room, 2 additional treatment rooms and laser room equipped with YAG, SLT and Argon lasers with indirect delivery. Equipment includes ultrasound A & B scans, IOL Master 700, Topography, 2 x Topcon Triton OCTAs, Zeiss OCTA’s and Optomap Silverstone widefield fundus/OCT camera. There are 5 part-time Optometrists with contact lens and a Low Visual Aid Service working together with our eye clinic liaison officer (ECLO). Three full-time and three part-time Orthoptists support the department as well as the Community Orthoptic Screening Service. Allied Health professionals are utilised in our eye clinic, there are optometry shared care clinics in Glaucoma, Nurse/Orthoptic led injection clinics and Orthoptic biometrists. Ophthalmic technicians perform vision testing, visual field and OCT imaging. The Ophthalmic Co-ordinations Hub is situated within the department itself.
There is an active teaching programme for junior staff in Ophthalmology. Continuous medical education at all levels is encouraged and monthly departmental audits are conducted. As a department, we are keen to develop our doctors encouraging their own professional development and goals.
As is appropriate for a unit of this size, all Consultants are General Ophthalmologists who are able to manage any ophthalmic problem that may arise, although each surgeon has a particular special interest. Current Consultant interests are Glaucoma, Medical Retina, Vitreo-retinal, Strabismus/Paediatric Ophthalmology and Oculo-plastics. It is expected that the post holder would not only contribute to the running of both Medical retina and General Ophthalmology clinics but also supervise middle grade doctors in casualty and, when appropriate, see urgent eye casualty patients. Triage of referrals into ophthalmology and supporting the paediatric consultant with Retinopathy of prematurity screening are also essential requirements of the job plan.
The successful applicant will be expected to participate in teaching both under and postgraduate students associated with the University of Buckingham and will also be expected to support colleagues doing these activities as part of his or her arranged job plan.
