At Rolls-Royce, we’ve been a force for progress for over 100 years. Join us and we’ll provide an environment where you can be yourself. An inclusive culture that invests in you and gives you access to opportunities where you can grow your career and make a difference.
For over 60 years we’ve provided the power for the UK Royal Navy’s nuclear submarine fleet, and at our site near Thurso we operate and manage the Vulcan Naval Reactor Test Establishment on behalf of the Ministry of Defence. Our apprentices play a vital role in helping us keep the UK safe.
Join us and you can expect outstanding career support from day one, debt-free qualifications, and the chance to build an amazing career in a friendly, supportive environment.
What you’ll do
In your first year, you’ll gain a strong foundation in the practical skills you need. Over the following three years, you’ll broaden and deepen your knowledge through a range of attachments within our Submarines business while working towards completing your Apprenticeship Standard and gaining relevant engineering qualifications.
This is hands-on work. Throughout your apprenticeship, you can expect to train on state-of-the-art products, equipment, and machinery, guided and supported by engineering experts.
You’ll be working on live projects and earn as you learn through formal training as well as practical experience.
What could you become?
You’ll develop specialist skills in your chosen area:
* Mechanical Fitter: Follow detailed instructions and technical drawings to assemble mechanical systems for nuclear submarines using hand and machine tools and measuring equipment.
* Instrument Technician: Learn how to install, maintain, and repair instruments that measure pressure, temperature, radiation, and chemical properties.
* Electrical Technician: Perform detailed work installing, testing, and adjusting electrical systems and repairing issues in wiring.
* Design Technician: Develop design solutions using AutoCAD and 3D modelling software to produce technical drawings.
What you'll need
You’ll need a minimum of four National 5s in Maths, English, and Physics/Engineering Science, plus one other technical subject at grade A-C.
We’re looking for adaptable individuals full of initiative, eager to learn and succeed. A genuine interest in the practical side of engineering or hands-on activities is essential.
To work for the Rolls-Royce Submarines business, you must hold a Security Check clearance. Rolls-Royce will support the application for Security Clearance if you do not currently have this in place. Due to the nature of work, we can only progress applications from individuals who are UK nationals or, in MoD approved cases, dual nationals.
What you’ll get
* A competitive starting salary with annual pay rises and pension
* 33 days holiday per year (including bank holidays)
* A choice of voluntary benefits including discounts at nationwide stores, gyms, discounted health care, free digital GP, Cycle to Work scheme, and more
* Continuous learning and development
* Support from managers, leaders, mentors, and other apprentices
* Opportunities to develop beyond your day-to-day role and get involved in social activities
* An independent, 24-hour, confidential counselling service
