Job summary This is a SPR post within the Department of UGI Surgery, Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The Oesophagogastric Unit is a regional cancer centre and carries out 100-120 resections for malignancy each year, serving a population of 2.5 million. The Oesophagogastric Unit also has a busy programme in benign oesophageal disease. There are 6 consultant surgeons - Professor N Maynard, Mr R Marshall, Mr B Sgromo, Mr R Gillies, Mr R Owen and Professor S Markar. Within the unit, there is one senior clinical fellow, three higher surgical trainees and an F1 doctor. This post will allow exposure to all aspects of elective UGI surgery, both benign and malignant, as well as emergency general surgery. The post is ideally suited to a candidate wishing to pursue a career in general surgery with an interest in UGI surgery. Main duties of the job The post holder's duties will be primarily at the Churchill site but with regular duties at the JR (emergency surgery) and Horton (elective surgery) sites. The post-holder will be involved in the pre-operative assessment and management of patients undergoing all aspects of UGI surgery, both cancer and benign, operative procedures and caring for these patients in the post-operative phase. There will be ample opportunities to participate in both open and laparoscopic UGI surgery and an opportunity to develop skills in diagnostic and therapeutic upper GI endoscopic if desired. The post holder will be expected to participate in audit, including the entry of data into the Unit's cancer database (CODA). There is an expectation that the post holder will contribute to the rota for emergency general surgery patients at all stages of the emergency surgery pathway, including initial triage assessment, surgery and post-operative care Emergency Surgery is based at the John Radcliffe Hospital. Additionally, the post holder will contribute to morning weekend ward rounds of UGI inpatients at the Churchill site (3 in 15 weekends).
