Responsibilities
* Supporting the Head of Radiation Protection in the development and enactment of a Radiation Protection Strategy appropriate to the site’s activities and radiation risks.
* Interpretation of Regulatory requirements principally under both IRR17 and REPPIR supporting compliance to site arrangements.
* Provide Radiological Safety advice to operational business units, presenting guidance to a defendable ALARP position with the purpose of assisting local management in delivering compliance with IRR17.
* Critically review, analyse and summarise data to draw conclusions and make recommendations to the responsible owner within key safety meetings.
* Preparation of guidance statements for radiological practices communicable to a wide audience.
* Undertake radiation risk assessments and support the implementation of effective risk management controls.
* Compliance oversight for activities across all site operations including the collation and reporting of performance metrics and incidents chiefly through supporting the work of local Lead RPSs working in the areas.
* Advise against instrument qualification, selection and suitability as used for routine surveillance and including the determination of waste sentencing.
* Provide radiological advice on the design & installation of new processes including radiation generators and high active sealed sources.
* Interpretation and reviewing of internal and external dosimetry data.
* Appointment within the corporate RWA arrangements to provide radiological intelligence to waste handling, clearance and sentencing.
* Preparation and delivery of training packages within the site’s Radiation Safety training programme.
* Investigate radiological incidents, trends and potential exposure capturing learning and initiating corrective action as necessary.
* Preparation, review and approval of related documents within the area of relevance to the role (Site instructions, Method statements, plant modification proposals, ALARP assessments, transport Radiation Risk Assessments).
* Support the business growth teams by communicating the radiological risks and the appropriate mitigation are fully explored and understood for any new proposed process.
* Participate in the emergency response programme which entails emergency exercises, off-site response and joining an on-call responders rota.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential:
* Current RPA2000 Certification as RPA or qualified Health Physicist working towards certification.
* Educated to Level 6 (Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent) in relevant STEM discipline or demonstrable equivalent capability supported by significant experience in radiation protection.
* Radiation protection professional qualifications e.g. AURPO, UKHSA RPTS.
* Demonstrable knowledge of the UK legislations associated with Ionising Radiations (IRR17, CDG19, REPPIR).
* Working knowledge of common Microsoft office programs including cloud-based systems; MS Teams, SharePoint.
* Strong understanding of ALARP and its application at an operational level.
Desirable:
* Experience operating as a Health Physicist within the nuclear industry and ideally with uranium-based materials.
* Detailed knowledge & understanding of instrumentation for nuclear operations including waste disposal & recycling.
* Knowledge of the Environmental Permitting Regulations/Radioactive Substances Act.
* Knowledge of Nuclear Site Licence conditions.
* Experience of radioactive waste management and/or RWA certification.
* Working knowledge of transport arrangements for radioactive materials.
* Expertise in radiation protection instrumentation.
* Current member of Society of Radiological Protection (MSRP or above).
