Transport for London (TfL) Engineers are always looking forward. This is an exciting opportunity to join the Environment & Sustainability Engineering team in Transport for London’s (TfL) Capital function.

Our Green Strategy and Corporate Environment Plan set out our ambition to tackle the climate and ecological emergency, and our priorities from now to 2030. TfL Engineering & Asset Strategy have a pivotal role to play from strategising and solution development through to supporting delivery. To meet this challenge, we are building our Environment and Sustainability Engineering capability in line with the huge amount of interesting and important work we have ahead.
We are looking for a Senior Engineering Leader to join our Environment and Sustainability Engineering team. Our team provides a professional engineering capability working across the asset groups to drive environmental performance improvements. The focus is on system-level technical solutions to deliver the desired integrated system outcomes - energy, carbon, air quality, biodiversity, climate change, adaptation, sustainable materials & resources.
Your key accountabilities will include:
1. Developing processes, tools and methodologies, and identifying and influencing best practice, to deliver environmental outcomes and enable continuous improvement across TfL
2. Developing, reviewing and maintaining technical or functional strategies, standards and governance
3. Working closely with industry, internal and external stakeholders to exploit existing technology and introduce relevant innovations and best practice in TfL
4. Representing TfL Engineering as a subject matter expert when engaging with suppliers, customers, industry bodies and external agencies
5. Providing people leadership for a team of engineers, direct reports or assigned
6. Managing resource and capability demand forecasts to support project delivery and business planning in a matrix environment
The following Skills, Knowledge & Experience are required for the role:
Skills
1. Ability to influence people at all levels across the organisation and outside, and facilitating joint decision-making - ESSENTIAL
2. Ability to manage customer expectations and deliver service to meet expectations – ESSENTIAL
3. Strong analytical skills with the ability to analyse complex data and produce solutions, and to visualise and articulate complex situations and proposals - ESSENTIAL
4. Ability to quickly understand unfamiliar problems, technical possibilities and operational implications, based on a sound understanding of engineering fundamentals - ESSENTIAL
5. Ability to elicit, analyse and manage stakeholder and user requirements - Desirable
Knowledge
1. Chartered Engineer or recognised international equivalent with good knowledge of relevant TfL, British and International Standards - Desirable
2. Knowledge of the TfL Vision, Mayoral Transport Strategy, business priorities and financial constraints – Desirable
3. Knowledge and understanding of technically complex projects involving complex stakeholder groups - ESSENTIAL
4. Knowledge of transport systems, infrastructure engineering and operations backed up by strong aptitude for holistic integrative thinking - Desirable
5. Knowledge of engineering contracts management and commercial impacts of engineering decisions - Desirable
6. Knowledge of whole life asset management, legislation, technical standards and industry best practice related to the environment and sustainability – ESSENTIAL
Experience
1. Experience of providing professional engineering services to significant value programmes/projects - ESSENTIAL
2. Experience of environmental and sustainability engineering, e.g. energy, carbon, air quality, biodiversity, climate change & adaptation, sustainable material & resources, best environmental practices – ESSENTIAL
3. Experience in applying systems engineering on transport, infrastructure enhancement programmes or complex projects – Desirable
4. Experience of building relationships and influencing a wide range of stakeholders – ESSENTIAL
5. Experience of leading teams, performance management, development and mentoring - ESSENTIAL
