The opportunity:
We have an exciting new opportunity for a Senior Underwriter (Financial Lines) to join our NMUK Broker team here at Markel International. This hybrid working role can be based across any of our offices in Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham, Rugby, Croydon, London as well as some home working. Our NMUK Broker Channel is the largest and fastest growing of all our UK business areas.
Our PMR team consists of Underwriters, Senior Underwriters, and Development Underwriters, who trade across our range of Financial Lines, Technology, and Life Science products. We are recruiting a Financial Lines Senior Underwriter to support our exciting growth plans out to 2030.
This role will report into the Markel UK Head of Financial Lines New Business Sales. The successful candidate will be responsible for underwriting new business cases within Financial Lines – Professional & Management Risks and will be a key member of the team.
What you’ll be doing:
* Contribute to ambitious New Business Targets across our Financial Lines Team, with a focus on Professional Indemnity underwriting.
* As a Senior Underwriter, you will act as a referral point, and work with the wider team to develop and deepen our expertise.
* Build and manage effective trading relationships with our broker partners, ensuring Markel is a preferred market for PI business.
* Provide and maintain a strong level of underwriting, demonstrating a detailed knowledge of company guidelines and authority levels.
* Review broker generated quotes and encourage brokers to place the business with Markel by highlighting our product benefits and negotiating terms.
* Maintain existing broker relationships through regular development meetings in conjunction with the Head of Financial Lines Sector Sales and Business Development Managers.
* Handle workflow from enquiry receipt to outcome through the Markel workflow platforms.
* Actively review and manage new business pipeline, working effectively with Distribution teams to enhance our opportunities.
Our must haves:
* Experienced Professional Indemnity underwriter and/or underwriting portfolios and binders.
* New business experience.
* Ability to demonstrate effective broker and market relationships.
* Excellent communication skills and effective at building trading relationships.
* Experience of taking referrals from team members and supporting the development of teams and underwriters.
