Job overview
Clinical Fellow in Critical Care FY2+/CT1+ equivalent. Day to day care of patients on the Critical Care units. Full-time including participation in a full shift rota system (48 hours per week).
Applications are invited for appointment to Clinical Fellow posts FY2+/CT1+ for a Fixed Term period from August 2025 for 6 months initially extending up to a year with mutual agreement. The posts are mostly based at the Royal Sussex County Hospital (RSCH) in Brighton with short periods at the Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath (approximately one week in 16).
This is an excellent opportunity for those with an interest in critical care to build up some clinical experience in this area and to build up CVs. It is an excellent opportunity for training and career progression. Prior critical care experience is not a prerequisite. This job is not suitable for those with previous intensive care and/or anaesthetic experience of greater than a year post foundation training.
Main duties of the job
* The Critical Care trust doctor must ensure that patients are managed in a timely and appropriate way in all aspects of critical care: resuscitation, stabilisation, working diagnosis, adequate monitoring, treatment, and discharge.
* Proficient in detailed handover of complex patients.
* Prompt assessment of the critically ill patients referred to ICU.
* The trainees will participate in the daily consultant ward round and review all admissions.
* Coordinate and evaluate the suitability for admission to ICU in consultation with the ICU Consultant.
* Communicate regularly with patients’ relatives.
* Identifying patients suitable for discharge and liaise with ward teams.
* Work closely with the Outreach Team, reviewing and manage unstable patients on the ward.
* Teaching and training of junior trainees and medical students.
* Attendance and participation in the critical care teaching (lectures, journal club presentations, M&M, Clinical Governance).
* Expertise and guidance in dealing with complaints and other areas of clinical governance will be available to the trainee.
* Other areas of management can be arranged, based on the trainee’s achieved competencies and requirements.
* Complying with UHSx infection and patient safety guidelines.
* Develop experience of placement of invasive lines.
* Management of neurosurgical critical care patients including LICOX, ICP, EVDs.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The post meets the requirements for ICM training as laid down by the FICM (stage 1-3) and candidates would be able to use this post to count towards experience for later training programmes or to apply for a Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR). However, these posts do not attract an NTN.
All candidates should be eligible for registration with the GMC. Where equivalent qualifications or experience are being offered, it is essential that the candidate provides written confirmation from the Royal Colleges.

Experience and Qualifications
* Basic Medical Degree
* Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice
* Advanced Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent
* Recognised courses specific to critical care including BASIC, FUSIC etc.
Clinical Skills and Experience
* Must have completed Foundation Training in the UK or equivalency including CREST.
* Previous acute medicine/ED/ICU/anaesthetics experience but only at SHO level (this post is not suitable for those with more than 1 year of previous critical care experience).
* Desire to work in Critical Care for future career.
* Demonstration of commitment to critical care as a speciality.
* Organised experience in ICU (ie taster week).
Knowledge
* Appropriate level of clinical knowledge / up to date for their grade of training.
* Knowledge and use of evidence based practice.
Organisation and Planning
* Experience and ability to work in multi-professional teams.
* Applicants should have sufficient post-registration experience in the UK and demonstrate an understanding of the NHS including clinical governance and resource constraints.
