The appointment is for an exciting clinical position in an active, friendly Clinical Microbiology/Infection service. We are looking for a Consultant in Medical Microbiology or Microbiology & Infectious Diseases. We are seeking a 7PA consultant to support our existing 4.9 WTE consultants for a period of 3 months, with a view to possible extension. This post is to cover a current vacant position and ideally involves cross-site cover of clinical duties.
The department operates a two consultant duty model, with one covering Basingstoke & North Hampshire Hospital (BNHH) and the other covering Royal Hampshire County Hospital, Winchester (RHCH), including calls from primary care and laboratory authorisation of Primary Care/Serology work. The laboratory scientific team is based in the Microbiology laboratory at Basingstoke Hospital. There is an essential services laboratory at RHCH that performs blood culture incubation, respiratory PCR, and a number of other diagnostic tests to support rapid infection and infection control decision-making.

* Respond in a timely manner to clinical and laboratory enquiries (in line with RCPath KPIs).
* Provide out-of-hours clinical advice on call on a 1:8 rota, including weekends, week nights, and bank holidays. Remote access is available to allow remote interrogation of LIMS and other Trust electronic systems (radiology, prescribing) when on call.
* Ensure that important findings rapidly reach the requesting clinicians and advise regarding appropriate action.
* Be involved in the clinical management of patients in the hospital and community, including daily ward rounds to ITU and complex infection patients.
* By mutual agreement, candidates with an interest in participating in the OPAT service and Infection clinic may rotate to cover this service.
* Supervise and support junior doctors and trainee clinical scientists in Microbiology as appropriate to their stage of training and needs.
* Liaise with infection prevention nurses and DIPC, ensuring day-to-day input as appropriate to operational infection prevention work, including outbreak investigation and management if required.
* Support the leads for antibiotic usage, Infection Control, and department and Pathology management as appropriate.
