Hammersmith Hospital IR serves as the centre for delivering very specialized reno-vascular and hepatobiliary care services for the North West London (NWL) sector, offering an out of hours on-call service, 7 days a week. This requires 2 nurses for on call shifts on weekdays, excluding public holidays, and 2 nurses on call during weekends and public holidays. Nursing services cover 2 Interventional Radiology (IR) rooms, patient recovery post-IR/INR procedures, including post-general anaesthesia (GA) and sedation, bed-bay management, CT ablation and biopsy, and emergency response, such as cardiac arrest.
The band 5 staff nurse will play an integral part in supporting the Junior Sisters and the team according to our trust values, and ensuring the delivery of high quality patient care within this innovative environment. We provide a comprehensive orientation program along with in house training, foundation courses, coaching and leadership training. You will build skills and knowledge on surgical scrubbing, circulating and recovery skills.
Main duties of the job
1. Independently manage a group of patients and provide high standard care within the specialty collaborating with the MDT to deliver individualised and personalised direct patient care.
2. Demonstrate adequate practice and specialist knowledge in the assessment, planning, and implementation of patient care. This will include history taking, physical examination, evaluate patients and relative’s needs, ensure patient is adequately prepared and safe for the agreed interventional procedure.
3. Adequate assessment and specialist care of the conscious – sedated patient. Responsible and correct administration within line with local and trust policies of conscious sedation.
4. Responsible for the correct administration, disposal and storage of medicines and blood products. Thorough knowledge of frequently used drugs within the department, showing understanding of potential complications and side effects, and their management.
The team works in conjunction with radiologists, radiographic staff and anaesthetists providing care for complex patients across all imaging modalities including Angio, CT, Ultrasound, MRI, and Recovery.
