Job summary We are looking for ambitious, dedicated doctors to join our middle grade team in the Emergency Department at Charing Cross Hospital. You will gain experience and training in a whole range of medical and surgical presentations and conditions, and the opportunity to liaise and work with world class teams from across the Trust. Charing Cross Emergency Department hosts the hyper-acute stroke unit for the region, as well as tertiary neurosurgical, ENT and oncology services. The department has recently refurbished and expanded the department has a large ambulatory care service and resuscitation area. The team is renowned for its positive ethos and supportive culture. There is a strong research ethic and a well-established Quality Improvement program throughout the department and the Trust. You will be encouraged to participate in quality improvement projects and will have regular weekly teaching sessions delivered by Consultants. There are opportunities to develop bedside ultrasound skills in workshops. We will endeavour to help you with career planning, whether to obtain exams or in support of training applications. Main duties of the job IEM Registrars provide full shift cover for the Emergency Department, 7 days per week, supported and supervised by Consultant who work shift patterns providing 16 hours per day, 7 days per week. You would be expected to work across all areas of the emergency department: rapid assessment, resuscitation room, majors & SDEC. You will be involved in the initial assessment of patients arriving in the emergency department either directly, via GP referral or brought in by ambulance with undifferentiated symptoms. You would be expected to provide initial assessment, initiate treatment, formulate a working diagnosis, organise relevant investigations and generate management plans. There will be opportunity for developing and extending procedural skills including cannulation (peripheral & central venous cannulation as well as arterial cannulation), insertion of chest drains (both Seldinger & trauma drains) use of point of care ultrasound among others. You would be expected to develop rapid assessment skills and be able to conduct a rapid review of a patient and initiate treatment and refer on where appropriate. You will have opportunity to develop clinical super vision and leadership skills within the ED as well as undertaking management & quality improvement projects.
