Volunteer Reading Helper to support children in Oxfordshire primary schools | Assisted Reading for Children (ARCh)
ARCh is looking for volunteers who are able to give a little time each week to go into a local primary school and support children with reading, confidence and self-esteem. Our mission is to inspire children to love reading!
What difference will you make?
Your time with the children will have a huge impact; it will allow the children to be exposed to books in a way that they may not have been before. A huge part of our sessions is the social skills the child will develop through 1:1 conversation and attention, as well as playing games and developing their confidence and self-esteem. Through our work, children are able to access the entire curriculum by improving their reading, meaning that their educational career is more open to them than before.
What are we looking for?
1. A passion for reading
2. Experience in working with children and young people
3. Sociable, patient and understanding of different learning abilities
4. An understanding of how children learn and develop their skillset
5. A desire to help improve children's life chances and give them a brighter future
What will you be doing?
Our volunteers go into a primary school local to them once or twice a week. You will spend 30 minutes 1:1 with up to 3 children, reading books, playing games and giving the children much needed time and attention. You will see the same children every week for a year, giving you both the chance to build a strong, positive relationship and see the child flourish! We provide all training, resources and DBS checks. We also broker the relationship with the school and find you a place at a school that is convenient to you. You will have a Fieldworker who is your volunteer line manager to support you via on-going training and check-ins. Your sessions with the children will be tailored to the child and their needs, and will develop over the course of the year. Sessions are child-led and children enjoy a "happy half hour" to destigmatise reading and hopefully open them up to a whole new world of books!
