PROGRAM PURPOSE:
The National Association of Chronic Disease Directors (NACDD) is a national public health non-profit agency focused on improving the health of the public by strengthening state and national leadership and expertise for chronic disease prevention and control. NACDD promotes health and reduces the burden of chronic disease through various programs and initiatives in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
SPECIFIC SERVICE FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The PHA Service Member will work with City departments and partners to support activities related to enhancing the local food system and urban agriculture network in Philadelphia, specifically around the city’s farmers’ market network.
* Update/develop farmers’ market resources and materials
* Help support the release of an annual survey to identify farmers’ markets in the city
* Conduct audits/assessments of farmers’ markets in the city
* Help coordinate annual farmers’ market operator calls
* Research barriers and needs of farmers’ markets in the city
* Help establish a system for markets to donate/distribute perishable food
* Attend monthly meetings with Health Department, Parks and Recreation, and The Food Trust staff
* Attend Farmers’ Market Advisory group meetings and join subcommittees as needed
* Support information sharing and peer-learning among operators and vendors
* Research funding opportunities to support farmers’ markets and farmers in the city
* Support other nutrition security/urban agriculture work as needed
DESCRIPTION OF ANTICIPATED SERVICE SCHEDULE:
* Hybrid service hours – at least 1 day per week in the office
* Service hours are to be completed Monday-Friday between the hours of 8:00am and 5:00pm.
* A maximum of 20% of service hours may be training, education, or other similar approved activities
* A maximum of 10% of service hours may be fundraising activities
DESIRED SKILLS & COMPETENCIES:
* Urban agriculture/farming/food systems/nutrition experience, knowledge, or interest
* Excellent communication skills - both written and verbal
* Self-starter with initiative
* Excellent organizational skills and ability to follow up and follow through on tasks

REQUIRED COMMITMENT:
* Service members are expected to complete 1200 service hours within a one (1) year timeframe.
* The service year is anticipated to begin 02/03/2025 and end 02/02/2026.
ORIENTATION AND TRAINING:
* Members must participate in pre-service orientation and PHA-specific training.
* Any other trainings deemed necessary by the Host Site supervisor.
EVALUATION AND REPORTING:
* Complete quarterly assessments of the PHA Program.
* Complete monthly reflection forms.
* Participate in quarterly performance evaluation and reviews with their Host Site supervisor.
* Submit service timesheets biweekly.
PUBLIC HEALTH AMERICORPS ELIGIBILITY AND REQUIREMENTS:
* Be at least 18 years of age at the commencement of service
* Have a high school diploma or its equivalent
* Be a citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States
* Satisfy the National Service Criminal History Check eligibility criteria pursuant to 45 CFR 2540.202
* Live within commutable distance of the Host Site to accommodate a hybrid service schedule
OTHER PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY AND REQUIREMENTS:
Must be willing to comply with all Host Site vaccination requirements, including for COVID-19.
