With a budget of around £365m, three hospitals and 5,500 staff, North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust provides hospital-based services to the population of Hartlepool, Stockton on Tees and parts of East Durham and Sedgefield as well as community, therapeutic and screening to a wider population across Durham and Teesside.
Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Radiologist or Breast Clinician to complement our established and experienced Radiology team.
We are particularly seeking a candidate who has experience in both screening and symptomatic breast work.
North Tees hospital houses a purpose-built breast unit. The unit has an excellent reputation for high-quality patient care, and we are proud of the first-class breast screening service covering Teesside, County Durham and Darlington, and North Yorkshire. The Breast Unit also provides symptomatic breast work for Teesside and parts of County Durham.
The successful candidate will undertake a minimum of 5 PAs of breast radiology. Candidates who wish to work entirely within Breast Radiology or those who wish for a more mixed Breast/General Radiology role will be considered. Duties of the General Radiology role would include participation in the general radiology on-call service, supported by overnight outsourcing (Nighthawk). There is no requirement to perform complex intervention out of hours. Candidates employed wholly or predominantly within Breast Radiology will not be expected to participate in out of hours provision.
The post is tenable on a whole-time (10 programmed activities) or part-time basis. Applicants unable to work full-time will be eligible for consideration for the post. Flexible job plans will be considered, including sessions at other centres to support research and expertise sharing opportunities.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will undertake a minimum of 5 PAs of breast radiology. Candidates who wish to work entirely within Breast Radiology or those who wish for a more mixed Breast/General Radiology role will be considered.
Duties of the post include participation in the general radiology out of hours service (currently 1:11), supported by overnight outsourcing (Nighthawk) from 8pm to 8am on weeknights and from 7pm to 10am at weekends. There is no requirement to perform complex intervention (such as nephrostomy) out of hours.
A standard fully specified Trust workstation (operating via a VPN connection) will be provided for home use to support home working and insourcing.

The North Tees Breast unit houses 3 mammography units equipped with Tomo and CESM facilities, 3 Ultrasound rooms, a shared Consultant Radiologist Office, a film reading room, surgical consultation rooms, and Breast Care Nurse and Admin offices. A part of the Screening and Symptomatic service is provided at Hartlepool which houses an Ultrasound room, a mammomat Revelation mammography unit, and Breast MRI facilities. Overall the service runs 9 Mammomat revelation mammography units over 3 static sites and 4 mobile vans.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Share in the provision of breast and general radiology to the Trust. The successful candidate will be encouraged to develop a subspecialist interest according to their own interests and expertise. Most specialist interests can be readily accommodated.
Supply breast and general radiology according to a negotiated job plan.
Timetabled commitments of the appointed candidate will cover both Hartlepool and North Tees sites, as do all newly appointed radiologists. The majority of clinical activity for radiologists takes place on the North Tees site.
The appointee will be expected to share the aspirations of the other radiologists to provide a wide-ranging, high-quality imaging service to patients within the Trust.
Breast Radiology Duties to include:
* Independent running of symptomatic clinics
* Active participation in breast MDT
* Reporting of Breast MRI
* Independent running of screening clinics and reading of screening mammograms is desirable but not essential. Candidates who require training in screening work will be considered
* Experience of performing vacuum excision is desirable but not essential. Candidates who require additional training will be considered
* Teaching and training of radiology registrars, medical students, foundation doctors and advanced radiographic practitioners
* Providing support and specialist breast opinions for medical and non-medical colleagues
General Radiology Duties to include:
* To provide a high-quality reporting service for general CT, MRI, and plain film examinations
* Perform ultrasound and other hands-on imaging procedures appropriate to the candidate’s subspecialist interest
The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the Radiology Out of Hours service and the provision of emergency radiology during normal working hours.

The post is subject to the Terms and Conditions of Service – Consultants England (2003). You must be fully registered with the General Medical Council (London) and be on the Specialist Register with CCT in Radiology or with Credential in Breast Disease Management (or within 6 months of qualification) at the time of appointment. You must be qualified to a minimum of FRCR.
