Cardiff and Vale University Health Board
Together with other senior colleagues, run a team of qualified and trainee clinical photographers in the Photographic Section of the Medical Illustration department, to provide a wide range of photography and video support to the staff of Cardiff and Vale UHB.
Main duties of the job
The job holder will practice as a Senior Clinical Photographer and team leader, monitoring the quality and overseeing the imaging training of Medical Illustration staff.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Operational
Work both independently and as part of a team to provide complex photographic and specialist imaging support to the Cardiff and Vale UHB through:
1. Conventional digital photography / video
2. Fluorescein and ICG angiography
3. Optical coherence tomography (angiography)
4. Optos widefield
5. Anterior segment photography and new emerging technologies
May be required to undertake routine and advanced clinical photography and video assignments, to support patient care, teaching and research across all sites in Cardiff and Vale UHB.
Make informed decisions about the deployment of staff, sometimes at short notice.
Support teaching and research activities of Cardiff & Vale UHB. Monitor completed work of the team to ensure high standards are maintained.
Communication
Ensure patients understand why photographs/scans/videos are being requested, the process of consent to clinical imaging, and how the images may be used.
Advise clients, from all levels, on the most appropriate use of photography/imaging/video techniques and resources.
Support and facilitate clients' access to and use of ophthalmic images.
Maintain expertise in ophthalmic imaging and be aware of technological advancements that may benefit future services.
With the Head of Photography and the rest of the team, develop and implement protocols for photography/scanning/video and workflow, including research projects.
Assist the Head of Photography in the forward planning, development, and promotion of the Service as a whole.
Contribute to the effective day-to-day running of the department, assist in the development of good working practices, and help support other team members.
Administration
Undertake day-to-day management of stock levels.
Maintain accurate work records and contribute to the auditing of these records.
Ensure the cost-effective use of all UHB resources.
Supervision and Training
Oversee the work of qualified and trainee Clinical Photographers, managing resources and organizing priorities in daily and weekly workflows to meet client needs.
Support, train, and develop junior/less experienced staff to ensure they are competent and proficient in the requirements of the ophthalmic imaging service.
Provide on-the-job training to Trainee Clinical Photographers, liaising closely with the Programme Manager of the Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Photography, Head of Photography, and other Senior Photographers in developing, monitoring, and evaluating the Trainees' progress and performance.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Possess a 1st degree in photography or related media subject or equivalent experience. Hold a post-graduate qualification in Clinical Photography / Medical Illustration. A member of the Academy for Healthcare Science (AHCS) voluntary register.
Experience
* Recent and extensive post-qualification practical experience in clinical photography. Recent practical post-qualification experience in a wide range of ophthalmic imaging techniques.
* Experience of supervising and training junior Clinical Photographers. Experience of undertaking imaging for ophthalmic trials.
Skills
* Extensive experience of a wide range of ophthalmic imaging skills.
* High level of computer literacy, particularly with digital imaging software.
* Highly developed patient management and organisational skills.
* Sound knowledge of clinical photography practice.
* Ability to work and communicate effectively with a wide range of multi-disciplinary staff.
* Able to manage conflicting priorities and meet tight deadlines.
* Excellent written and oral communication, and influencing skills.
* Ability to work on own initiative and within a team, delegating to team members and organising service workload appropriately.
* Good interpersonal skills with the ability to manage own time and act as an effective team player.
* Evidence of managing multiple demands, meeting appropriate deadlines.
* Skills in teaching and training. Digital video capture, editing, and export skills.
Special Knowledge
* Extensive knowledge of ophthalmic imaging including (but not exclusively) fluorescein angiography, ICG, anterior segment, fundal photography, and OCT.
* Knowledge and understanding of current and future trends in the NHS, ophthalmic imaging & the clinical photography profession.
* Knowledge of consent, copyright, Mental Capacity Act, and Data Protection in relation to clinical photography and video.
