UCLH are looking for a Highly Specialist Neuro Speech and Language Therapist to join their team starting in January 2025.
Main duties include but are not limited to:
1. To demonstrate highly specialist clinical expertise in the assessment, treatment and management of language, communication and swallowing problems in adult clients within a tertiary setting, including Neurorehabilitation, providing appropriate and evidence-based specialist intervention and evaluation of outcomes and to maintain associated records as an autonomous practitioner.
2. To demonstrate highly specialist knowledge in this clinical area underpinned by current evidence-based practice and outcome measures.
3. To demonstrate highly specialist clinical skills for interpretative assessment techniques and interventions in the care of patients with tracheostomies and those requiring instrumental procedures e.g. videofluoroscopy.
4. To make appropriate differential diagnoses and highly specialist clinical decisions on evidence from assessment of complex cases.
5. To demonstrate excellent communication skills and counselling skills, the ability to empathise in order to support and counsel clients and carers to accept the implications of their presenting disorder.
6. To be skilled in working in and liaising within a multi-disciplinary and multi-agency environment. To demonstrate good negotiation skills in working with other team members, carers or other professionals.
7. The clinician’s highly specialist level of expertise in the field will ensure that s/he can reassure and instil confidence in clients, carers and other professionals.
Essential Requirements
1. Must be able to commit to full time working pattern, Monday to Friday 8.00-4.00pm.
2. Degree in Speech and Language Therapy.
3. HCPC Licence to practice as SLT.
4. Registered member of RCSLT.
5. Member of Neurological CEN.
6. Successful completion of highly specialist post-graduate study relevant to communication (e.g. aphasia, dysarthria, dementia) and swallowing disorders (accredited dysphagia course) at MSc level or equivalent.
7. Experience in neurology and progressive neurological conditions needed.
8. Great communication, collaboration, interpersonal skills.
Desirable Requirements
1. Successful completion of highly specialist/expert short courses in tracheostomy assessment and management (including use of speaking valves for use with patients on ventilators), interpretation of videofluoroscopy and the highly specialist assessment and management of dysphagia (cervical auscultation, MSc modules).
2. Training in FEES and videofluoroscopy would be highly beneficial.
3. Evidence of working within the NHS or equivalent is desirable but not essential.
