We are delighted to advertise 3 Substantive Consultant posts in Anaesthesia at Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust. The Consultant anaesthetist will be responsible for delivery of high-quality, evidence-based care to the service users in accordance with the trusts values, procedures, and operating policies. The posts are ideally suited for consultants with a specialist interest in 'Obstetric Anaesthesia' or 'Generalists' with subspecialist interests in anaesthesia for major surgery, perioperative medicine, or Paediatric anaesthesia. Obstetric posts consist of regular sessions on labour ward and maternity theatres. Other sessions are negotiable to suit the applicant's sub-specialty interests. Options include sessions in Gynae-oncology, ENT, Colo-rectal, Orthopaedics, Ophthalmology, Pre-assessment, and Peri-operative Anaesthesia.
Our new hospital is likely to open within the next year and hence the post holders must understand the ongoing changes within the trust service and be prepared to contribute actively to the process. Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do and have various project streams. New ideas and experience in this area will be highly welcomed.
Main duties of the job
The successful applicant will join the current department of 49 existing highly motivated and respected anaesthetic consultants, including 16 who currently provide obstetric cover, supported by a team of 18 experienced specialty doctors and trainees. We currently provide an on-call cover for each site on a 1 in 16 frequency. Initially posts are for 10PAs with additional sessions available if mutually agreeable. Requirements for training are described in the Person Specification. From the non-clinical perspective, strengths in the fields of either medical education and simulation training or service development and risk management would complement the department well. The department is looking for enthusiastic candidates who will bring new skills, knowledge, and techniques to the department. It is essential that consultants joining the department are flexible, forward-looking, and committed.
The department prides itself in flexible job planning. Our aim is to provide high quality patient experience but in a very staff friendly environment. There is great focus on staff wellbeing both at department and trust level. We have been pioneers in new ways of working and demonstrated that in trauma and peri-operative medicine and have been recognised nationally. We always receive excellent feedback from our trainees and encourage all consultants to participate in undergraduate and post graduate training.
About us
Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust (SWBT) is an integrated care organisation with a budget of approximately £600 million and over 7,000 staff. Diversity and social care is at the core of what we do as the Trust provides Community and Acute Services to over half a million people in an urban centre that demands massive regeneration and has substantial premature mortality.
Our new acute hospital, the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH), opens in 2024 and will provide care to our local population from first class, purpose-built premises. As a result, the base of this role may change to MMUH from 2024 (or beyond). If this is applicable to your role, you will be informed during the recruitment process and continuing your application with this understanding. The development of the new hospital will play an important role in the regeneration of the wider area and in improving the lives of local people and reducing health inequalities.
We have three newly emerging strategic objectives:
1. Our People - to cultivate and sustain happy, productive, and engaged staff.
2. Our Patients - to be good or outstanding in everything we do.
3. Our Population - to work seamlessly with our partners to improve lives.
