Education, Families and Youth Officer
Location: RSPB Scotland – HQ. The suitable candidate will be based in Scotland (be that home/hybrid based)
Hours: Part-Time, 18.75 hours per week
Salary: £27,123.00 - £28,123.00 Pro Rata

Please note that this role requires the need for occasional evening work (2-4 hours per month).
RSPB Scotland is passionate about enabling children and young people to engage with and take action for nature. The ideal candidate will have experience in youth participation, and a commitment to the rights of children and young people to be involved in decisions which affect them. Our Education, Families and Youth team helps colleagues across our reserves and projects in a variety of ways to engage with our younger supporters. We also work directly with young people through our Network for Nature and other youth initiatives.
What's the role about?
Part of this role involves building the capacity of RSPB colleagues on our reserves and sites to safely and effectively engage children, young people and families in our important conservation work. However it also requires working directly working with young people interested in our national campaigning and advocacy aims to restore nature in Scotland.
Duties include - Non-Exhaustive
* Enhancing RSPB colleagues' understanding and confidence in youth participation - so that more young people can take action for nature.
* Communicating complex conservation and policy issues to young people in a way that enables them to campaign and express their views on issues they feel strongly about.
* Supporting youth group volunteers with the compliance, training and administration needed to run successful groups.
* Monitoring evaluating and reviewing areas of Education, Families and Youth delivery to ensure we meet agreed targets.
* Delivering safeguarding training and responding to queries/incidents involving children and vulnerable adults across a range of RSPB activities.
* Supporting and supervising volunteers to extend the work of the Education, Families and Youth team.
* Seeking opportunities to develop new approaches to helping young people gain experience in conservation activities.
What we need from you
Essentials:
* Effective skills in working with young people and supervising volunteers to do so as well.
* Excellent communication (both verbal and written) and interpersonal skills - being able to communicate ideas effectively relative to the audience your working with.
* Ability to collaborate with internal colleagues and external partners.
* Attention to detail - an ability to plan events and activities safely and effectively.
* Excellent time management, planning and organisational skills an ability to manage and deliver pieces of work within an agreed time frame.
* Ability to be proactive, use initiative and work independently.
* Ability to balance a strong focus on achieving successful outcomes with the need to empower, enable, motivate, and develop others.
* Competent in the use of cloud based platforms such as SharePoint, OneDrive, Office 365, etc. for normal business use.
* Experience of being an effective member of a team.
Desirables:
* Experience of working in the charitable sector or in an organisation that works closely with young people or families.
* Youth Work qualification.
