We are seeking two Consultants to join our Emergency Department at our site location of Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton, Somerset.
You will provide, to a high standard, the full range of specialist diagnosis, treatment and care to patients attending the Emergency Department, and play a full part in the development of Emergency Medicine within the Trust, in conjunction with the lead clinician for Emergency Medicine.
You will participate in an on-call rota to provide emergency cover. When not on-call, we may in exceptional circumstances ask you to return to site for emergencies if we are able to contact you. You are not, however, required to be available for such eventualities.
Main duties of the job
* Dedicated shop floor clinical shifts to include direct management of patients and clinical advice to the medical staff on duty.
* Dedicated shop floor education shifts to include shop floor-based workplace based assessments, simulation, micro-lectures, clinical and educational supervision.

* The post holder will be required to participate in the on call rota. The ED Consultant on-call rota consists of 1:6 non-resident on call cover (departmental presence by day or times of peak demand and off site on-call).

Continuing Professional Development & Research
The Trust recognises the importance of continuing development. As such we encourage senior staff to give priority to their continuing professional development with thirty days of study leave over each 3 year period available for this.
We have an onsite Academy run in conjunction with both the University of Bristol and Plymouth, and staffed by four full-time administrative staff, alongside a well-stocked library with access to electronic journals and 3 full-time librarians. We encourage knowledge sharing across the department and trust, with weekly meetings for both hospital staff and general practitioners.
As a Department we are engaged in several on-going projects, and research is strongly encouraged, particularly when supporting your professional development and the service development of the department.
The Taunton and Somerset Research and Development Consortium Executive Group manages research within the Trust, giving general advice, training, and provides support for individual projects. To further support you in the preparation of material for lectures and publications we also have a full-time medical photographer.
The department has produced a number of publications in peer reviewed journals, and is currently participating in a number of multi-centre research studies. You will also benefit from the advice from other consultants in the team who include a member of the RCEM research committee.
Educational Supervision and Teaching
You will get to be involved with teaching and training junior doctors, ACPs and ENPs, helping with both their professional and personal development. Our Consultants ensure that the junior doctors in their care are not overwhelmed by clinical commitments, or overburdened by responsibilities inappropriate to the experience required. You will also be responsible for the assessment and appraisal of trainees under their supervision and must keep the Clinical and/or College Tutor aware of any problems that may arise.
Teaching junior medical staff on our weekly training programme and supervising training in the Department, you will also share in the teaching of medical students, nursing staff and ambulance personnel, with protected teaching for F2/ST1-2 and Middle Grade staff provided on Wednesday afternoons. Alongside this, ED provides teaching for Acute Medicine and Surgical trainees, supporting the Trusts range of Life Support courses, and participating in the hospital Grand Rounds, giving 4 presentations each year.
Musgrove Parks onsite Somerset Academy of the University of Bristol sees third year students rotate through the ED on their musculoskeletal disease, emergency medicine and ophthalmology module, and 5th year students come to the department whilst on their Surgical attachment.
Other Duties/Responsibilities
Infection Control - It is the responsibility of all staff to familiarise themselves with, and adhere to, current policy in relation to the prevention of the spread of infection and the wearing of uniforms.
Clinical Audit - The appointee will be expected to contribute to the development and reporting of Clinical Quality Standards. As such you will actively participate in initiating and supervising audits related to your sub-speciality, Liaising with the audit speciality Lead Consultant and gaining approval from the Clinical Effectiveness Committee.
Quality Improvement You will be encouraged to participate in quality improvement projects to support the ongoing development of the department. This is supported by the hospital successful Quality Improvement team, who can provide direct support for projects as well as running a programme of Quality Improvement education activities.
Clinical Governance - All clinical staff are accountable and responsible for their own clinical competence and should limit their actions to those for which they are deemed competent. Clinical staff are also required to comply with the requirements of their professional organisations regarding supervision.
Administration/Budgetary responsibilities - Responsibility for undertaking the administrative duties associated with the care of patients and the administration of the department.
Locums are not normally employed to cover the absence of Consultants who are away on leave. The number of Consultants who are away on leave at any one time will be agreed with the Trust specialty policy. During the absence of colleagues on leave, Consultants are expected to provide agreed levels of cover.
Cover for Colleagues and Emergencies - To provide cover for colleagues in their absence, and to deal with emergencies as the occasion demands.
