PURPOSE OF THE ROLE:
* Our growing Infrastructure, Projects and Energy (IPE) team is looking for an experienced Lawyer (4-8 years PQE) to join our team in Manchester to advise public and private sector clients on a variety of energy and utilities, social infrastructure, and transport projects.
* In this role, you will work on commercial contracts relating to infrastructure and public services and advise on the full spectrum of issues relating to energy and utilities, social infrastructure, and transport sector mandates, acting for a broad range of public sector bodies, utilities, companies, developers, and financial institutions.
THE TEAM:
* Our IPE practice is known for its quality and breadth of expertise. As one of the most established multi-disciplinary teams of any law firm, we give clients the confidence they need to succeed.
* Our first-class team, which is consistently ranked in the top tier in the directories, provides innovative, timely, and commercial advice from inception all the way through the lifetime of our clients' projects in markets as diverse as water, large scale outsourcing, renewable energy, transport, and healthcare, in the UK and all over the world. We frequently advise on novel and "first in class" projects.
* We act for a range of developers, sponsors, and procuring authorities, and we have advised funders, as well as public and private sector clients, on some of the most challenging assignments in the market in recent years.
* We advise on complex social infrastructure schemes spanning multiple sectors including healthcare, education, housing and regeneration, and local government, nationally and internationally on projects such as the Turks and Caicos Islands Government on its Hospital PPP, a new hospital in Indonesia, purchasing care homes, advising on commercialising IP for NHS Trusts, Salford City Council's £80m social housing regeneration project, a prominent North West University on its complex student accommodation redevelopment, and a number of high profile private hospitals on the procurement of services arrangements with the NHS.
* In the energy and utilities space, our work includes several pathfinder projects such as advising: United Utilities on its Haweswater Aqueduct Resilience Programme DPC project, a major infrastructure project to provide water to Manchester and the Pennines; the National Wealth Fund on the Sizewell C new build nuclear power station; and SGN on Gas to the West, a pipeline bringing gas from Northern Ireland to the Irish Republic.
* AG's transport team is recognised as one of the most experienced in the sector with technical expertise across a range of national and international projects. We specifically focus on rail, urban transit, ports, freight and logistics, and transport hubs. We are on the legal panels for the Department for Transport, Network Rail, Transport for London, and Transport for Greater Manchester.
WHAT TO EXPECT IN THIS ROLE:
* With support from the team, you will have responsibility for drafting and negotiating commercial documents, managing transaction processes, and supervising the contribution of less experienced colleagues.
* Strongly encouraged to take responsibility for business development both by engaging directly with client contacts at networking events and by providing training.
* Taking an active role in leading and developing junior talent within the team.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERTISE:
* You will be 4 - 8 years PQE, with strong experience in at least one of the Infrastructure, Energy, and Transport sectors at a national and/or international level.
* We are also interested to hear from more experienced candidates, particularly with a broader commercial contracts background.
* The ability to actively support complex transactions, liaising and coordinating with fee earners from other relevant disciplines across the firm as needed.
* Good drafting skills, including the ability to free draft complex concepts.
* The drive to contribute to the general upkeep of the group (whether that be to training, precedents, or know-how generally).
* You enjoy being client-facing and have enthusiasm for intellectually challenging work, are ambitious, curious, and confident to deliver at the highest standard.
* You like business development and will actively engage with and encourage junior members of the team to develop their business development skills.
* You will manage junior colleagues and will work with them to develop technical and 'soft' skills.
* Commercial common sense: an aptitude to understand and advise on the commercial drivers from our client's and their counterpart's perspectives.
* An enthusiasm for work in the infrastructure sectors we work in.
* You will be resilient: recognising that our clients can require advice on short notice or for work to be undertaken against challenging deadlines.
