The Pharmacy Technician will work closely with the Senior Pharmacy Technician, Dispensary Manager, and the dispensary team in helping develop the dispensary service. This includes helping to coordinate and support the day-to-day running of the dispensary.
The post holder will help in co-ordinating and supporting the dispensary team. They will work closely with medicines management technicians, stores and distribution team, and the purchasing team. They will also be responsible for training and development and implementation of procedures for all technical staff working in dispensary.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Assist in the development of the technicians’ role in the dispensary.
2. Develop and optimise the use of medicines from all wards in the Trust.
3. Be an accredited checker (ACPT) for dispensed items in dispensary and for the discharge team.
4. Assess the suitability of returned drugs for use within the Trust according to agreed protocols.
5. Liaise with the ward pharmacy team and manage the discharge tracker for patients being discharged.
6. Co-ordinate the day-to-day dispensary team and support with training for dispensary/rotational technicians.
7. Dispense and label medicines for patients ensuring that patients have appropriately labelled medicines and ensure that supplies will last whilst on the ward and at the time of discharge.
8. Co-ordinate the discharge medication by ensuring that PODs sent to pharmacy are put together with newly dispensed items in advance of patient discharge.
9. Dispense and counsel patients regarding their medication regimens to ensure patients understand their medication and possible side effects. This may include patients with certain barriers (e.g., hearing problems, language issues) and will also include counselling on specialist medication (e.g., dermatology medicines, TB medicines on out-patients).
