Abbeyfield Living Society is looking for a Cook at Halcyon House. Halcyon House is a care and nursing home for older people in the heart of the village of Formby in Merseyside.
The role involves cooking breakfasts and preparing cereal for the residents, while lunch and tea time meals are prepared using nutritious ready-made meals from Apetitio.
You will also have 2 members of kitchen staff to provide support to you in the kitchen.
Pay: £12.58 p/h - £12.85 p/h
Hours: 40 hours a week. Shift times are 7:30am till 5:30pm.
Rota: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday

The Role of Cook
* As a Cook, you’ll need a relevant Certificate in Food Hygiene or be prepared to obtain one within the first three months in the role. You should have demonstrable experience of cooking varied, healthy, and safe meals for large groups (twelve or more, and sometimes up to 20) on a regular basis.
* You should be able to communicate and interact well with people and work productively as part of a team. In a modern working environment, it is essential to be able to read and write to a good standard.
* You must be methodical and highly organized; your kitchen and equipment should be kept clean and tidy, with an effective method of stock rotation.
* Finally, you should demonstrate empathy and understanding of the nutritional needs of older people.
About You
* In consultation with residents and staff, you'll create healthy balanced menus, with choices reflecting the needs and preferences of residents.
* You’ll plan, prepare, and cook residents’ meals from the agreed menu, considering personal preferences or recognized dietary requirements (e.g., diabetes).
* You’ll ensure a safe and sufficient supply of catering products by developing a system of ordering supplies in a timely manner. To ensure good stock control, you’ll make sure catering orders and deliveries are recorded using documentation supplied, enabling all orders to be checked and audited.
* Maintenance of an effective stock rotation and control system is paramount, allowing you to manage catering costs within the agreed catering budget.
* You will ensure safe and proper use of catering equipment and report any defects to management. It's important to adhere to kitchen cleaning procedures and schedules in accordance with Environmental Health standards, keeping the kitchen and store areas in a clean and hygienic condition.
* Correct use of all equipment and products in line with COSHH requirements is key, as is the need to keep all COSHH assessments under review. You will also participate in and supervise the completion of all relevant records in relation to food safety.
Please note this role will require eligibility to work in the UK, two satisfactory employment references, and an Enhanced DBS check, the cost of which will be met by Abbeyfield.
