This is a great opportunity to get involved with a grass-roots community project. We need gardeners to make our community garden look beautiful!
We'd also love some volunteers to help run kids activities and assist with set-up and pack-up.
Hillfields Community Garden
About Hillfields Community Garden: We are a group of local residents who have come together to develop a growing project which will bring the community together benefiting all ages.
We started working on this project during the COVID lockdown of 2020. At that time the need for outdoor social activities, support for people’s mental health and wellbeing, and developing a sense of community felt extremely important, and this really motivated us to turn the Community Garden idea into reality.
Since then, the council has agreed to us using an area in Hillfields Park to create a community garden. So far, we have built and planted two raised beds, and have plans to build more of them, put in a wildflower area and an orchard. We are currently working on the design of the community garden, after which we will be looking for funding for the next stage of its development.
Main aims of the Hillfields Community Garden Project:
1. Reducing isolation and improving mental health through nature, wellbeing activities and social events.
2. Bringing all members of the community together.
3. Together we will grow, share, and cook our own produce promoting healthy eating through shared meals.
4. Provide a volunteering programme which upskills and connects people, especially those who are facing unemployment following Covid-19.
5. Provide space for outdoor community activities like gardening playgroups for babies and toddlers, gardening activities for students from the local schools, gardening social groups, gardening for people with disabilities, etc.
