Babcock is rapidly establishing itself as an international Naval ship designer and builder. We have built on the success of the UK MOD Type-31 Frigate and have secured contracts for frigate export variants (AH) with overseas customers. As well as supporting exports of frigates, the engineering team is actively working on other ship newbuild and life extension programs around the world, from small fast attack craft all the way up to aircraft carriers.

As a Naval Architect, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. Your role will support the complex shipbuilding programme, developing designs solutions through the entire life cycle of a platform.
Day-to-day, you’ll be supporting the delivery of technical solutions, from concept design studies, new build bid submissions to final vessel acceptance. You will also support the development of graduate and Assistance engineers.
1. You will work within design teams throughout the design lifecycle helping to ensure functionality of design.
2. You will develop design solutions as well as produce substantiation reports for tasks undertaken including stability assessment, concept designs etc, under the guidance of Senior and Principal naval architects.
3. In addition, you will belong to the wider engineering capability group and will have the opportunity to support other projects in different roles within your discipline with a focus on longer term career development.
This role is full time, 36 hours per week and provides hybrid working arrangements with 2/3 days in the office/onsite and 2/3 days working from home.
Essential experience of the Naval Architect
4. Experience in the naval/marine industry
5. Awareness of using a variety of naval architecture packages e.g., Paramarine, NAPA, Foran, Aveve, Ansys etc, and design packages e.g., ship stability, 2D & 3D CAD.
Qualifications for the Naval Architect
6. Either Degree qualified or HND/HNC level qualification in an Engineering discipline with design experience in the marine or defence industry.
7. You will be a member of a relevant institution (e.g., RINA, IET, IMechE, IMarEst etc.) and either hold Chartered engineer status or working towards Chartered engineering status.

The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role.
