This Senior Engineer role gives you the opportunity to work in a leading global medical device company, using the latest equipment and tools to research & develop innovative products helping restore sight to millions of people all over the world.
You will participate in the research, design, development, manufacturing and testing of implantable medical devices and pharmaceutical products, working in multidisciplinary project teams from across the company as well as collaborating externally with surgeons, inventors, research groups and universities.
The role is based on-site at our Worthing HQ.
What You'll Be Doing
1. Optical design, prototype development and testing together with specification development for intraocular lenses
2. Technical lead within cross-departmental project teams developing new ophthalmic products from concept feasibility to full scale manufacturing
3. Critically assessing the Company’s products, processes and systems to improve effectiveness, quality and efficiency
4. Generate and develop innovative new research ideas (including next generation products) as agreed with line manager
5. Apply advanced optics knowledge to develop solutions to complex technical issues and challenges across new product development, product improvement & manufacturing projects
6. Perform risk assessments to determine the likelihood of harmful effects resulting from new/modified products/processes
7. Develop new Design Verification and Validation Protocols and techniques
8. Collaborate and share expertise and research findings with other scientific and technical staff
9. Help drive a culture of business-wide innovation
10. Regularly interacting with customers (internal and external, including medical professionals) to better understand their needs (both known and unknown) with a view to improving current products, driving innovation and nurturing collaborations which lead to future new product development opportunities
11. Providing guidance, support and training to project team members
What Experience Do You Need
1. Masters or PhD in physics or relevant technical discipline
2. Zemax optical design software experience, 5+ years
3. MATLAB software experience, 5+ years
4. Expert knowledge of optical design principles and test methods
5. Experience working within a multidisciplinary project team
6. The ability to be organised, work autonomously and to work on your own initiative.
7. Zemax optical design - user defined surface DLL development
8. A working knowledge of medical device regulations including the Medical Devices Directive (e.g. ISO13485, ISO11979, FDA QSR 21, CFR 820)
9. Ability to interpret patient optometry data, biometry and refraction information
10. Comfortable interacting with clinical staff in healthcare environments e.g. operating theatres.
11. Experienced and comfortable interacting with international regulatory bodies at a complex technical level.
12. Experience working in an intraocular lens company designing and developing innovative ophthalmic products and processes, 5+ years
