Consultant Colorectal Surgeon with Benign Colorectal Surgery interest
Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust wishes to appoint a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon with a special interest in Benign Colorectal Surgery (pelvic floor, abdominal wall hernia, or ambulatory benign colorectal surgery). You will be part of the General Surgery on-call rota at the Aintree site. We are looking for a keen, dynamic Consultant willing to integrate with existing teams of 10 colorectal surgeons to deliver a first-class service. It is a full-time post consisting of 10 PAs, of which 1.5 are dedicated SPA time. The job plan and SPA entitlement will be formally reviewed after 6 months and adjusted as necessary. The new appointee is expected to have main elective and emergency work at the Aintree site but also have elective theatre for high-risk benign colorectal cases and cross-over theatres on the Royal site. On-call duties are described in detail further on.
The Trust is committed to innovative and technical developments within surgery, and this is demonstrated within the services we deliver. Applicants must have full GMC registration, entry on the Specialist Register for General Surgery via CCT or CESR (CP) or European Community Rights - proposed CCT/CESR(CP) date must be within 6 months of the interview. They should be able to provide evidence of high standards achieved in technical operating, especially in benign colorectal surgery. If successful, you will be joining a well-established unit and will be expected to participate in the development of our future services.
Main duties of the job
Applications are invited for suitably qualified individuals for a Consultant Colorectal/General Surgeon with an interest in benign colorectal surgery, Department of Colorectal Surgery currently with regular clinical duties on 2 sites of the Trust: Royal Liverpool Hospital (RLH) and Aintree Hospitals (AUH).
This is being advertised as a full-time post but all applications will be considered on merit, including those hoping to work less than full time.
The position comes with full secretarial support, a dedicated office in our current building, and equitable support from the junior doctors and AHPs who form part of the wider colorectal team. We currently have 10 colorectal consultants, 6 ST places, 3 CST, 3 FY2, and 10 FY1 in colorectal, as well as 2 surgical assistants, a ward ANP, and a team of 7 Colorectal Cancer Nurse Specialists. There are RCS approved colorectal fellow and a North of England laparoscopic fellow (NLF) in the department.
There will be a rota for 7-day dedicated colorectal consultant cover to look after the inpatients to avoid problems associated with multi-site working.
Job responsibilities
It is expected that the successful candidate will spend most clinical time with IBD and NET patients. The candidate will be strongly encouraged to take one other sub-specialty work from ERC, endometriosis, or pelvic floor. All three services are regional tertiary referral with dedicated teams and MDTs.
It is expected that the candidate will be part of the on-call general surgery at the AUH site which is currently covered by the Emergency general surgery team in daytime with specialty consultants contributing to out of hours and weekend general surgery cover. There is also specialized colorectal cover during the daytime at the RLH site. Expected general surgery rota will be 1:20 and colorectal specialized cover is 1:12.
It is expected that this may change at some point in the future (later half of 2022) as the merger progresses. There is a plan to have all acute on-call general surgery take place at AUH site with elective cancer surgeries at the Royal site.
