Bristol is an ambitious, global, and diverse city and the City Council is committed to building a better Bristol that includes everyone in the city’s success.
This is a fantastic opportunity to join Bristol City Council’s Natural and Marine Environment Team in a lead Health and Safety role that delivers some of Bristol’s most high-profile services, including: Cemeteries and Crematoria, Marine Harbour Operations, Docks Engineering, Formal Parks, Play Areas, Nature Reserves, Sports Facilities, Leisure and Catering Facilities, and Retail Plant Nursery.
Alongside our significant and varied day-to-day operations to deliver these services, we undertake major and specialist projects and planned programmes to maintain and improve the quality and safety of the Natural and Marine Environment.
Our aim is to ensure that we provide safe, secure public services. You will work with numerous stakeholders to ensure a safe environment for our service users, staff, contractors, and residents.
This is a rare opportunity to play a leading role and be part of a very dedicated team in some of the most important and visible services the Council offers to Bristol residents and visitors.
We are looking for someone with:
1. Demonstrable experience in a health and safety environment, and working knowledge of operational H&S Legislation, ideally with experience in Marine, operational engineering, and parks operation delivery.
2. The attributes to work with delivery teams and managers in a critical role. Friendly and able to challenge staff and contractors’ performance to ensure they meet our expectations and high safety standards.
3. Experience of undertaking audits and/or inspections of operational activities, contractors, and workplaces to verify compliance with legislative requirements.
4. Risk management methodology, calculation, and reporting experience.
5. Experience in devising and delivering a health, safety, and wellbeing compliance programme.
We need someone who is motivated and passionate about addressing health, safety, and wellbeing issues and is not daunted by working in a dynamic and developing service.
You will be predominantly workplace-based, in each service area's offices and across the range of Natural and Marine Environment sites.
Why Bristol City Council?
At Bristol City Council, we go that extra mile for our people; we offer a work environment which is fast-moving and supportive, giving you the chance to use your skills and develop new ones within a high-profile organisation. For the majority of our roles, hybrid working arrangements are available, giving teams the opportunity to work in a way that suits them, balancing service need and individual choice - mixing both home and office working.
Join us and you’ll receive an excellent rewards package including flexible working and flexitime, membership of the Local Government Pension scheme, and a generous annual leave allowance. In addition, you’ll be working in a supportive environment where you’ll have the chance to make Bristol a better place and contribute to its future.
