Climate change is one of the biggest and most pressing challenges facing Governments across the world. In this role you will be at the heart of the Department’s strategy to accelerate the shift to greener transport, and drive more sustainable travel behaviours, to ensure that transport plays its part in meeting this challenge. The Environment Strategy directorate leads on policy to move the nation’s transport onto a more sustainable footing while maximising the economic opportunities for the UK.
As the UK’s renewable transport fuels regulator, the Low Carbon Fuels (LCF) Delivery Unit oversees the operation of the Renewable Transport Fuels Obligation (RTFO) and will also deliver the Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Mandate which came into force from 1 January 2025. The RTFO and SAF Mandate are two of the Government’s most important routes for reducing emissions from transport.
We’re looking for someone who enjoys working to procedures and clear steps and interacting with external stakeholders as you will be the first point of contact for stakeholders by managing the shared mailbox. You will be instrumental in making sure the schemes run smoothly and play a key role in ensuring the LCF Delivery Unit is working efficiently. You will provide advice to stakeholders on all aspects of the schemes including compliance with sustainability standards through third party assurance, chains of custody in the global supply chain, reconciliation of fuel quantities. You will feed into a supportive team who enjoy working together to find solutions to challenges.
Responsibilities
Key accountabilities of the role include:
* Administer the online IT system. You will play the role of the system administrator, providing relevant system-related support to fuel suppliers and other system users. You will also manage the RTFO Scheme accounts for eligible fuel suppliers and others and ensure a smooth user experience.
* Monitor & Review fuel supplier’s obligations. You will track the third-party provided fuel quantities to determine when a supplier may become obligated under the RTFO scheme. Where discrepancies or irregularities are identified, you will work closely with the fuel suppliers and relevant stakeholders to resolve the errors.
* Process applications for certificates in a timely manner. You will work with the rest of the team to review sustainability claims associated with the fuel within applications and make recommendations on its approval or rejection. You will coordinate this process according to a strict timetable and facilitate meetings for team discussions, while maintaining an audit trail of outcomes and decisions.
* Act as primary focal point to external stakeholders. You will establish and maintain close and productive professional relationships with biofuel producers, suppliers, and other stakeholders by addressing any compliance or legislative queries regarding the RTFO scheme. You will provide support on promoting the scheme and resolve any administrative problems. You will allocate stakeholder questions to the most relevant team members.
* Maintain up-to-date documentations & record-keeping. You will provide team support to ensure sufficient audit trials by keeping all communications (in forms of emails or otherwise) and documentations recorded according to the team’s filing system. You will manage the team’s email filing system.
* We are recruiting two roles, one will focus on the RTFO and one on the SAF Mandate. However, both roles should maintain oversight of live issues on both schemes to support team resilience.
