Job summary The Lead Nurse will appropriately manage patients with osteoporosis to prevent deterioration and disease progression, reduce admissions as a direct consequence of osteoporotic fracture, promote early identification and intervention in patients presenting with osteoporotic fractures. The Lead Nurse will develop & lead a co-ordinated approach in the specialist field of osteoporosis, provide professional support and highly specialist advice on a consultancy basis to patients and staff across the health, social care, private and voluntary agency sectors on issues relating to osteoporosis which is based on the latest available evidence of best practice. The Lead Nurse will adopt a highly visible and accessible approach for patients, their carer/relatives and staff and their role will be clinically focused to support the department as a whole. They will lead by example and empower staff in their personal and professional development to undertake a greater range of clinical skills to modernise and improve patient care, including updates of essential training. The service is primarily nurse led, with oversight from two Rheumatology consultants and supported by secretarial staff. Nurses carry out DXA scans at Paignton Health and Wellbeing Centre and Osteoporosis Management clinics there and at Torbay Hospital. Clinics are done both in person and on the telephone, with regular MDT meetings for discussion of complex patients.
