The Role:
As an Engineering Design Manager, you will be the focal point for technical leadership of several design work packages for new and upgraded conventional production equipment and facilities. You will lead the design through its lifecycle from concept to handover to the facility. Partnering with the Senior Engineering Manager and working alongside stakeholders and technical experts, you will ensure facility designs (infrastructure, utilities, processes, and equipment) are suitable and appropriate, identifying and validating solutions to meet complex business needs while considering functional performance, regulatory safety requirements, and nuclear licensing conditions.
What you'll need to be considered:
We'd love to hear from engineers with a recognised, relevant qualification (HNC/D/Degree) and the ability to work across functions, providing a supportive interface between the Facility, Safety Case Subject Matter Experts, and Technical Authorities. Experience in the following would be highly beneficial:
Delivery of engineering design and outputs in a highly regulated industry (Nuclear experience advantageous but not essential)
Contributing within a multi-discipline environment and being responsible for the engineering design and guardianship of high integrity assets through the whole lifecycle
Articulating technical complexities and allocating Project/Design Engineers with design-related tasks to meet working programmes
Production machinery and/or production line layout experience
All candidates must be willing and able to obtain and maintain the necessary security clearance for the role and be willing and able to work in designated areas.
Key Accountabilities:
Technical leadership of design suppliers to deliver the facility design and equipment solutions
Deliver integrated facility designs with appropriate safety documentation in a proportionate manner
Assess the suitability of the facility design for the next phase of the lifecycle (e.g., tender, construction, commissioning, handover) and advise the Senior Engineering Manager
Maintain and promote high personal standards in environment, safety, health, security, and quality, and be a great team player
Additional accountabilities may be defined and appointed through the Chief Engineer Management Arrangements, with appointees listed within the Company Design Authorities and Technical Authorities, as held in the company management system
Key Responsibilities:
Be the lead engineering representative on the project, responsible for delivery in terms of quality, meeting requirements, safety, value for money, and schedule
Ensure that the Engineering Requirements are suitable and appropriate, and advise the Senior Engineering Manager
Recommend the budget and programme to the Senior Engineering Manager to deliver design
Assess the suitability of engineering design resources (both internal and external to AWE) to execute facility design, ensuring adequate competency and competency records
Lead, drive, communicate, and deliver Facility Designs with due regard to safety, quality, schedule, cost-effectiveness, and lifetime value for money
Maintain oversight of the facility design as it develops via routine reviews
Deliver design solutions that meet business needs, functional performance, through-life performance, and are licensable and deliverable
Manage the Design Intent and Design Information Configuration from inception through to project handover
Provide functional support in identifying and implementing change, development, and improvement
Assist the Head of Design Engineering in developing the Facility Design capability within AWE, encompassing both improvements and resource skills development
Fulfil any other reasonable duties aligned to your position from time to time in line with business needs
