Interim Senior Skilled Vehicle & Plant Technician - Fleet Workshops Reference no: Stoke on Trent 5249725 Pay Rate: £25.00 per hour PAYE 37 Monday – Friday, 06:30 - 16:00 This opening assignment is for 5 months City: STOKE ON TRENT Operate a shift working pattern on a weekly basis. 06:30-14:30 Mon-Thurs 06:30-14:00 Friday 08:00-16:00 Mon-Thurs 08:00-15:30 Friday Undertake the full range of repairs and maintenance to the council’s vehicles, plant, and equipment. This is a specialist role with substantial responsibility for ensuring the safety and roadworthiness of the councils transport machinery and equipment, the role holder will be expected to have an in-depth knowledge, skills and abilities in the areas listed below. However as these are not regular duties of the role the role holder will be allocated appropriate tasks by a Team Leader, Supervisor or his delegate. As such there is a requirement for ongoing regular creative/ innovative thinking in the resolution of problems/issues. Working mainly within the workshops, the role is subject to intense physical effort in disagreeable conditions. Key responsibilities:
* Carry out repairs and preventative maintenance in accordance with the laid down manufacturers specification, including fault finding and diagnostic testing to motor vehicles, contractors plant and grounds machinery powered by gas, diesel oil, petrol or electricity together with associated equipment
* Carry out repairs including fault finding and diagnostic testing to vehicle/plant electrics, hydraulics and pneumatics, especially those fitted to specialist vehicles such as refuse, road sweeper, gully vehicles and buses
* Carry out repairs and modifications to vehicle bodywork, including general panel beating, engineering fabrication, design, redesign and installation
* Complete general welding (gas, arc) brazing and soldering as necessary
* Complete repairs using machine shop tools and equipment including general bench work
* Carry out vehicle safety inspections, in accordance with the Vehicle Inspectorate standards and guidelines and to complete all relevant documentation accurately
* Prepare vehicles for, and drive to the Vehicle Inspectorate Test Station for Plating and Testing and to carry out minor adjustments which may be identified on this inspection as required
* Attend to vehicle/plant and equipment breakdowns, and effect roadside repairs or recovery to the Transport Workshops or Repair Agents, as directed by a Team Leader, Supervisor or his delegate
* Undertake general engineering work and fabrications when required
Qualifications:
* Hold a relevant qualification in Plant Motor Vehicle Technology equivalent to NVQ level 2/3
* Hold a VOSA recognised Certificate for Large Goods Vehicle Safety/Roadworthiness Inspections
* Must have an LGV category C Driving Licence and ideally category C+E Driving Licence
Knowledge:
* Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of M.O.T. Testing, standards and procedures and be a qualified MOT inspector or actively in training as an MOT Inspector
* Must be have a good knowledge of working on different types of agricultural vehicles and machinery
* Demonstrate a thorough working knowledge of all Health & Safety Legislation and City Council Policy, and to ensure adherence to a safe working environment and safe working practices
Experience:
* Demonstrate a minimum of 2 years post qualification experience in vehicle or plant maintenance in a multidisciplinary workshop environment.
* Demonstrate some experience of Supervising, motivating and controlling employees within the post holders remit.
Skills & Abilities:
* Should have some basic IT skills that can be developed and the ability to use pre-designed programmes on computing and associated equipment as a tool in the provision of the Vehicle and Plant Maintenance Service and the management of the Workshops
