Principal Engineering Geologist/Geotechnical Engineer (Birmingham)
PJA is seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Principal Engineering Geologist/Geotechnical Engineer to join our Ground Engineering and Contaminated Land Team, based in Longbridge, Birmingham.
The successful candidate will form part of a dedicated team of geo-environmental consultants and engineering geologists who pride ourselves on being able to offer robust detailed assessments relating to soil and groundwater contamination and geotechnical issues and provide advice on the broad geotechnical and geo-environmental aspects of land development. In conjunction with the wider engineering team at PJA, we provide a wide range of services from preliminary due diligence assessments associated with land acquisitions to the design and management of effective holistic ground solutions to enable the development of both brownfield and greenfield sites for a range of both commercial, residential and private clients. Our skillset means we are well-placed to respond to the challenges our industry currently faces, and the ideal candidate will be an advocate for ongoing professional development and delivery of training sessions within the team.
The successful candidate should ideally have over eight years’ relevant post-graduate experience in consultancy, ground investigation and/or contracting and should be able to demonstrate a proven track record relating to the proactive management and successful delivery of geotechnical and/or contaminated land projects. Knowledge and expertise in both remediation and earthworks implementation and verification, and the associated materials management requirements, is preferable.
Strong commercial awareness is critical and the successful candidate will be experienced in all aspects of work winning, including pricing of projects and recognising the necessary exclusions and limitations to be included in fee proposals.
The responsibilities for this position are anticipated to include, but are not limited to the following:
* Preparation of fee proposals and project management, managing project finances and invoicing, through to project completion;
* Direct liaison with internal and external clients and wider multi-disciplinary project teams;
* Ownership and preparation of a wide range of technical deliverables to a high standard, including:
o Preparation of desk study reports;
o Design, procurement and management of site investigations, including sampling and logging of in situ soils and rocks, gas and groundwater monitoring;
o Scheduling of chemical and geotechnical testing;
o Recording and interpretation of site data, including developing geotechnical ground models;
o Preparation of geo-environmental interpretative reports;
o Geotechnical design and reporting in accordance with CD622;
o Preparation of earthworks specifications, remediation strategies and validation reporting;
o Preparation of coal mining risk assessments;
* Reviewing the work of others, assessing technical approach and compliance with relevant legislation, guidance and client requirements, and providing feedback to the originator;
* Line management and mentoring of junior staff;
* Supporting the Sector Lead in team management, resourcing and development;
* Preparation of site specific health and safety risk assessments;
The ideal candidate should have experience with the use of borehole software such as HoleBASE/OpenGround and AGS, geotechnical design software and have excellent MS Word and Excel skills. The candidate should be able to demonstrate an understanding of geotechnical considerations and awareness of how geotechnical risks and liabilities will impact upon land ownership and development. The candidate should also be prepared to demonstrate some knowledge of key legislation and guidance relating to the assessment of contaminated land, the wider planning regime, and waste and materials management.
As the role will involve both client and regulator liaison, excellent communication and report writing skills are essential. This role is ideal for a candidate looking to further their existing knowledge and experience with involvement in a variety of private sector and public sector projects. The role requires a proactive approach with drive, positivity and enthusiasm and a strong desire to succeed.
Applicants should be chartered with a professional organisation such as the Geological Society or the Institute of Civil Engineers, or be working towards Chartered Status with a view to submit their application within the next 12 months.
This is a permanent position, based in Longbridge, Birmingham, however, travel to and from sites for site work and meetings around the UK will be required.
