The Anaesthetic department and the Intensive care Unit at the Queen Elizabeth Queen Mother Hospital are active in audits and research and there will be plenty of opportunity to participate in Quality improvement projects and Research. Regular formal teaching sessions and journal club also form part of the learning available. Anaesthesia is provided for elective and emergency surgery in the operating theatre complex of 6 main, 3 day-surgery and 1 obstetric theatre. The CEPOD theatre and obstetric theatre are available 24 hours per day. There is a resident anaesthetic consultant for CEPOD from 8 am to 6 pm on weekdays and for part of the day at weekends.
The duties of the post meet the requirements of the CT3 Equivalent (Stage 1 ‘top up’) posts as detailed by the Royal College of Anaesthetists. The 2021 RCOA Anaesthetics curriculum will be followed.
It will include pre, per and post-operative management of surgical patients, assisting with care of the patients on the ICU, and provision of assistance with resuscitation calls and acute pain queries. Travel to other sites within the Trust will have to be anticipated to allow for full teaching experience.

Anaesthetic Specialty Trainees (CT3/ ST3 and above) cover CEPOD, labour ward and obstetric emergencies, and support ICU, paediatric and trauma emergencies with rotation procedures, both on elective lists and as emergencies. We deliver service for day-case and inpatient surgery for trauma patients on-site, and elective Orthopaedic surgery at our sister hospital in Canterbury creating opportunities for upper and lower limb regional blocks.
We provide elective and emergency cover for the paediatric population and run a lively obstetric service with approximately 3000 LSCS per year, elective and emergency.
