We are currently recruiting for an EHS Director (Europe) to join the IPL team. This is an exciting role for an experienced Health & Safety professional with a passion to drive change. Reporting to the VP of Operations (Europe), the successful candidate will manage a team of Health & Safety Managers across our European sites. We have five sites across the UK (Wolverhampton, Rotherham, Castleford, Tamworth & Hull), one site in Cork, Ireland, and one site in Lommel, Belgium; therefore, you need to be flexible to travel to these locations on a regular basis.
This is a UK-based remote role; the successful individual must be willing to travel to all our European sites (as listed above) on a regular basis.
As an EHS Director at IPL you will:
* Lead the development and execution of health & safety, environmental management, vision, mission strategy, and functional excellence for the division with a ‘hands-on’ pragmatic ‘lead from the front’ leadership style, working closely at site level with the Site Directors and local HSE.
* Drive the establishment of objectives, plans, standards, procedures, and policies ensuring successful implementation and integration of all phases of the EHS Management System for the division.
* Determine project timelines, oversee analysis, budget, communication, and implementation.
* Build a deeply embedded safety culture by identifying and overcoming barriers to improving safety behavior in a sustainable way across all the plants.
* Be the subject matter expert for all operational EHS management matters at the European divisional level, enhanced through frequent and effective engagement with the business.
* Own and drive the safety culture transformation project, review all incident investigations and reports, ensuring root causes are determined, and develop and share effective actions to prevent reoccurrence with all locations.
* Contribute, manage, and maintain the European region EHS management system.
* Report on the EHS programme and performance to the divisional and executive leadership teams.
* Further develop EHS strategies, standards, programmes, and plans in partnership with the EHS leadership team.
* Communicate and coordinate the adoption of industry best practices in EHS across all plants.
* Liaise with all stakeholders to ensure a consistent approach to EHS.
* Coach, develop, and mentor a team of plant-level EHS advisors to develop and deploy excellence in this discipline for the company’s operations.
* Improve EHS oversight through audits and reviews of manufacturing activities and track performance in process safety, fire engineering, life safety, technical reviews, safety reviews, and risk assessments.
* Support the risk and insurance team with risk engineering audits and associated recommendations.
* Lead continual improvement initiatives, developing the company’s EHS management system and maintaining/developing ISO45001 (or equivalent) certifications.
* Work as part of a wider global EHS/H&S leadership team to deliver strong performance and embed the latest thinking and practice.
* Organise the recruitment and training of staff, as well as monitoring staff performance and progress.
* Establish strategy and best practices for staff to ensure achievement of overall business objectives. Work with the divisional team to translate strategy into specific annual performance goals and departmental objectives including KPIs, and to track them.
What you will bring to the role:
* Qualified to at least Degree Level in Occupational H&S.
* Minimum of 7 years EHS experience in a manufacturing environment.
* 5 years minimum at EHS Senior Management level.
* Strong and evidenced safety culture development and transformation experience.
* Excellent relationship-building skills with the ability to build a network of connections both internally and externally.
* Significant experience in developing and driving an EHS strategy.
* Understanding of EHS legal frameworks within the EU and the ability and resourcefulness to determine the practical application of the requirements.
* Be an ambassador, vocal advocate, influencer, and presence for EHS management.
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work in a vibrant multi-discipline environment.
* Self-starter, strong work ethic, and decision maker.
* Proactive, collaborative, and pragmatic mindset.
* Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, MS Teams, SharePoint, and PowerPoint.
* Ability to travel.
