Band 7 Senior Sister/Charge Nurse - ED (Secondment)

As an experienced senior nurse leader, the post holder is expected to work as a member of the multi-disciplinary team, planning and providing high quality care for patients with acute illness or injury within the Emergency Department.
The post holder will lead teams of nurses, planning the workload of the team and providing advice and support as needed.
The post holder will take managerial control of the department when on duty and take responsibility for specific senior management roles within the department.
Main duties of the job
Responsible for leading teams of nurses and other health care professionals working within the department to ensure the smooth operational flow and exceptional patient care.
To act as a role model to the team, providing sound clinical advice, guidance and expertise.
To maintain and promote effective leadership, inspiring and innovating the team.

Job responsibilities
Be responsible for the evaluation of the effectiveness of the planned care by daily reviewing the care being given, from reports from other nursing staff, direct observation of the patient, and ensuring that accurate nursing records are maintained through monitoring and auditing.
To participate in non-clinical management processes (e.g., Performance Review, sickness management, recruitment and selection) and ensuring annual appraisals are undertaken.
Be available to take responsibility for the co-ordination of 24-hour nursing care of each patient in the department.
To maintain up to date knowledge of and adhere to the NMC / HCPC Code of Conduct and other regulations, and Trust policies and protocols (e.g., the storage and administration of drugs).
Use good communication skills to disseminate information and promote and maintain good working relationships within the department and Trust-wide.
Promote the use of communication skills to overcome language and understanding difficulties when discussing complex or sensitive issues relating to diagnosis, prognosis and treatment with patients and their relatives.
Be able to show empathy and compassion when caring for people who are experiencing bereavement or have a relative who is critically ill.
Be able to use communication skills when taking telephone queries about medical conditions or injuries, the condition of patients or from patients or their relatives who have a complaint.
To assist in establishing the promotion of health and the prevention of illness.
Be responsible for the assessment of nursing needs and plan and implement care required by patients, in conjunction with nursing observations, medical requirements and with the co-operation and partnership of the patient and their relatives.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Current NMC registration as a nurse or current HCPC registration in an appropriate field (ODP / Paramedic etc.)
* Mentorship course or equivalent
* ATLS / EPALS / HMIMMS
Experience
* Recent relevant experience as band 6 or 7 in hospital-based emergency care
* Experience at managing a team
* Experience of professional development
* Experience of health roster and managing sickness
* Experience of clinical governance
* Evidence of Post Graduate degree level emergency nursing / relevant experience
* ATNC
Knowledge and Skills
* Venepuncture/cannulation
* Plastering/Splints/Slings
* Wound care and management of burns
