Job overview
We are delighted to seek applications for 3 substantive posts of Consultant Geriatrician to work alongside our existing Elderly Care Team and Orthogeriatric consultant. There is a generous financial Welcome Payment (£22,000) available in addition to relocation expenses.
These posts have been created to help deliver a more integrated approach to managing the increasingly frail and complex patients within Salisbury, and potentially those undergoing surgery at Salisbury Foundation Trust (SFT). We have recently opened our new AFU (Acute Frailty Unit) and are working on developing a SDEC service in conjunction with this. As well as this, we will be opening a brand-new, state of the art, Elderly Care ward in April 2024, and are looking for new consultant leaders for this ward. This represents an opportunity for service development within the in-patient template of Elderly Care.
As well as this, our team currently provides in-patient General Elderly and Rehabilitation services, and liaison with Acute Medicine via our OPAL team. As well as this, we provide PD services, Falls clinics, Orthogeriatrics, Surgical Liaison and Rapid Access Clinics, as well as Community Liaison both within the city of Salisbury, but also the surrounding rural districts.
Main duties of the job
We are keen to support applicants in developing their specialty interests with a view to enhancing our current service provision. In particular, we have recently opened our new AFU / SDEC unit, as well as anticipating the opening of our new ward in April 2024. Once we have a full complement of Geriatricians, we are keen to offer posts (possibly on a rotational basis) between our more traditional Elderly Care and rehabilitation wards, and this new unit. Post holders will have opportunities to develop their acute medical skills, work with our front door liaison team (OPAL), as well as liaise directly with our community colleagues in order to provide a more integrated approach to acute Geriatric Medicine.
Salisbury is a tertiary referral centre for Burns patients throughout the South of England, as well as having a unique spinal unit and general surgery on site. In line with NCEPOD, it has been recognized that these patients are becoming increasingly complex and frail and need specialist pre- and post-operative care. As such we would also like to develop our ability to provide robust surgical liaison for these patients, as well as support our current orthogeriatric service.
Finally, there is scope for wider developments including GP advice and guidance, and community Geriatrics, liaising with our community nursing teams and the new NHS at Home service for South Wiltshire.
Working for our organisation
Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust (SFT) is an innovative hospital with a proud heritage and over 250 years of experience behind us. Here we’re driven to deliver an outstanding experience for everyone and have been well regarded for the quality of care and treatment we continue to provide for our patients and also our staff.
We are an acute Trust, rated “Good” by the CQC, with a track record of high performance providing regional and super regional specialist services such as: Burns, Plastics & Reconstructive Surgery, Wessex Regional Genetics Laboratory, Wessex Rehabilitation, Spires Cleft Centre and the Duke of Cornwall Spinal Treatment Centre. We have about 470 beds and employ over 4000 staff.
We support flexible working and will consider requests taking into account the needs of the service. We think working here is pretty rewarding. You can access a range of NHS discounts, receive a minimum of 35 days paid holiday (pro rata), and we offer a generous pension scheme. On-site benefits include car parking (fee applies), leisure centre, day nursery and holiday play scheme.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The successful candidate will be expected to take part in the acute medical on call rota at SFT on a 1:15 basis, as well as other clinical commitments such as acute care ward rounds, rapid access clinics, and MDT meetings.
The post is advertised as full time (10 PA’s), but less than full time or flexible working would also be welcomed.
There is also a generous relocation package available to candidates, up to a maximum of £8,000 (terms and conditions apply), as well as a £22 000 welcome payment (terms and conditions apply).
